About the Akita

The largest and only classified large breed Japanese dog is the Akita. The Akita has also been known as the Akita Inu and the Japanese Akita. Created in the 1600’s, it was originally known and used for dog fighting and hunting. In the 1930’s the dogs were on the verge of extinction when an extraordinary group of dedicated men and women saved the breed. Known as the Society for the Preservation of Japanese Breeds, this group is single handedly responsible for the continuation of this breed. Today the Akita is known for being a companion dog or a security dog. The love and loyalty they feel for their owner makes them excellent companions. They will be there whenever they are needed whether it is for fun on the beach, walking in the park, or hiking through the mountains. As a security dog however, its strong presence and intense stare can make any stranger loose composure if they put the dog into a defensive mode. The Akita will not hesitate to put anyone threatening to harm their family into an apprehensive state.

The Akita Temperment and Intelligence

Akitas typically have a tendency towards aloofness and being undemonstrative, thus making obedience training challenging. It is best to begin instruction with the puppy as early as possible. Most are mild-mannered, cautious, intelligent, courageous, fearless, and active. They are very affectionate with their family members. Being extremely faithful and yearning for affection, it can be trained to endure children and/or other pets. Having a tendency towards aggression with food, other dogs and animals, Akitas definitely are in need of supervision. If taunted they may bite, therefore teaching children how to treat them with constant gentleness is key.

Akita Characteristics

The classic look of the Akita is to have small, deep brown eyes. Ears that are petite, thick, always vertical, and triangular shaped. Their noses are considerable in size and black. Their coat is durable and contains a delicate undercoat. Tails are usually stout, muscular, and are carried over the dog’s back. Their paws are webbed and cat-like which makes for an excellent swimmer. The most common colors for the Akita in America and Europe tend to be black or brown and white with a black muzzle. In traditional Japanese style, the most common color combination is orange and white, commonly known as the orange coat. Other combinations permissible are pinto, red, sesame, and brindle. The coarse coat of the Akita needs substantial grooming. They do shed a great deal twice a year and bathing is only to be done when utterly crucial. Averaging a weight of 75-130 lbs. and a height of 24-28 in., the Akita is very well built for its size. A typical male is between 26-28 in. and 120 lbs. while the female is generally 24-26 in. and 95 lbs.

Akita Health Concerns

Akita’s are known to be prone to the following diseases: hip and elbow dysplasia, thyroid problems, immune diseases, skin problems like SA and eyes (PRA, Micro, entropion), the patella and other problems with the knees.

Choosing an Akita

Dignified and stately, the Akita is best suited for experienced dog handlers. The strong will of these dogs makes them experiment with their boundaries quite often. Their aggressive nature and fearlessness also requires a skilled person to remain in control at all times. They are reasonably active inside and will do fine in an apartment if they are frequently exercised, though a home with a sizeable yard is preferable.
