About the American Foxhound
The American Foxhound arrived in America from Great Britain in the 1800s. This dog was originally used as a fox hunter.
Today this breed is still used as hunting and companion dog.
The American Foxhound Temperment and Intelligence
Foxhounds are very sweet- tempered, loving and kind dogs that are excellent with children. They also have a great disposition around other dogs though they may not be as kind to other animals. Depending on the line this dog comes from they may be protective around strangers or very friendly. Their lines may also make them difficult pets. Some are terrific while some hang strong to their pack and hunting instincts. They are somewhat solitary animals and some hunt individually thus making training difficult.
American Foxhound Characteristics
The American Foxhound low set, long ears that if lengthened out could reach the tip of its nose. They have large, wide set brown eyes and a square shaped muzzle. Their legs are straight and moderately strong with small, round paws and rough toe pads. The tail is set high with a slight curve. Their coat is short and rough and may be of any color. This breed is very healthy and not prone to any known problems.
Choosing an American Foxhound
American Foxhounds are not suited for apartment life because of their intense need for outdoor exercise and their well known melodious barking. Without proper exercise, this breed is known to become destructive.
