American Water Spaniel Characteristics
About the American Water Spaniel
The American Water Spaniel, also known as the Tazi and Baluchi Hound, was originally used as a large game hunting dog and a flock guard. It was created for its distinct look rather the purpose it was to serve. Today the Afghan Hound is used mainly as a companion and guarding dog.
The American Water Spaniel Temperment and Intelligence
American Water Spaniels are very friendly dogs who are always ready to go out and work. They have an endless amount of energy and love to be in the water. They are highly intelligent and learn quickly when it relates to their work. Owners of this breed must be careful not to yell at this dog because they respond best to calm voices. They are somewhat possessive of their family and therefore can make good guard dogs. They are ok with children but are not recommended for small ones because they are known to be food possessive.
American Water Spaniel Characteristics
The American Water Spaniel has a narrow muzzle, round brown eyes, long ears that are set high on the head. They have a rounded neck, compact body, a tail which curves slightly and thick straight legs. Their feet are medium sized and hold their toes close to them. This dog has a coat which is curly and double coated to protect them from the different elements of the water. The coat is thick on the body and is feathered around the legs. The most common colors are either liver, brown or chocolate in a solid form.
American Water Spaniel Health Concerns
This breed is prone to epilepsy, dysplasia and thyroid problems.
Choosing an American Water Spaniel
American Water Spaniels will do fine in an apartment but need a sufficient amount of exercise to prevent them from becoming destructive.
