About the Belgian Sheepdog

The Belgian Sheepdog, also known as the Groenendal, is one of four Belgian breeds that are nationally known throughout Belgium.Originally, this dog was used as a livestock herding dog.

Today, the Belgian Sheepdog is used as both a watchdog and companion dog.

The Belgian Sheepdog Temperment and Intelligence

Sheepdogs are intelligent, courageous, protective and devoted to their owner. Ever watchful and attentive to their property, these dogs make great watchdogs for any family. They are also very affectionate and friendly with those they know well. They are weary of strangers of though they don't show fear or meanness towards strangers. These dogs are very loyal and love to please their owners but they need a job to do at all time. They exhibit a lot of energy and need a proper way to release it.

Belgian Sheepdog Characteristics

Belgian Sheepdogs have dark brown, slightly almond shaped eyes with stiff, triangular ears. Their slightly pointed muzzle rests atop strong jaws with strong teeth. They have a solid black nose and lips that show no other colors. Their tail is slightly bent when relaxed and raises with a curl when at work. Their long, straight legs contain oval bones rather than round ones. Their paws are small and well rounded with black toe nails usually. The coat of these dogs is usually long and black with a slight rough texture. Their hair is long throughout and shorter on the head, ears and legs. The unique characteristics of these dogs are ornamentation- a long, thick collar of hair around the neck and tail.

Belgian Sheepdog Health Concerns

For the most part this breed is very healthy overall. Some reported problems have been epilepsy, skin allergies, eye problems, and dysplasia.

Choosing a Belgian Sheepdog

Because the Belgian Sheepdog has so much energy it does best with a large yard. It will do well in an apartment if given a lot of exercise. These working dogs thrive when off leash so time must be made to give them that release.
