About the Black Russian Terrier
The Black Russian Terrier, also known as the Chornyi Terrier, was developed in the Russia in the 1940's. Originally, this breed was used as watchdog for the Soviet Union Army.
Today, the Black Russian Terrier is used as both a companion dog and as a security dog.
The Black Russian Terrier Temperment and Intelligence
This breed has a trademark personality which oozes courage, confidence and self-assuredness. These dogs are extremely intelligent and faithful to their owners. They are calm in nature and somewhat aloof toward strangers. Great family dogs, this breed is excellent with children and loves to play with them. If trained early, this dog will train very easily because they love to please. Dominance is not an issue with them although they should not be in a home with another dominant dog. They only bark when necessary and will react quickly if they need to protect their family. They love to be with their family are not suited to live in a kennel apart from their family.
Black Russian Terrier Characteristics
Black Russian Terriers are the epitome of strength and power. Their oval shaped dark eyes are covered with heavy facial hair. Their small triangular ears are set high upon the skull and the tips lay close to the eye. They have a short muzzle with a flat forehead. Both the lips and nose are black and show off their large, very white teeth. This breed has a very strong and thick neck which sits atop a deep set chest. The tail is usually docked though some are undocked. Their shoulders are wide and broad and are their long legs. Their paws are large and round in shape with thick, firm toe pads. This black colored dog has a double coat. The outer layer is coarse while the undercoat is soft and thick.
Black Russian Terrier Health Concerns
The only recorded major health problem known to this breed is dysplasia.
Choosing a Black Russian Terrier
Black Russian Terriers are happiest when in a home where they can be close to their family. They do require regular exercise but prefer the closeness of their owners when inside or outside.
