About the Chinese Shar Pei

The Chinese Shar-Pei, also known as the Shar Pei, was originally created in China to be used as an all-purpose dog.

Today, this dog is used mainly as a companion dog.

The Chinese Shar Pei and Intelligence

Shar-Peis are very loving and affectionate dogs who love to be with their family members but are shy around strangers. Because of their devotion to their family they make good watchdogs. These intelligent dogs can learn commands well but are stubborn often and need a firm handler. These dogs have been known to become the boss of a family so one needs to make sure that they are in charge and not the dog. Unlike many breeds, this very tidy dog has the unique ability to potty train itself. It doesn't like to make a mess.

Chinese Shar Pei Characteristics

The characteristic look of the Shar-Pei is all of the wrinkles on the dogs large head. This breed has a flat skull, broad muzzle, sunken in almond-shaped eyes and tiny triangular-shaped ears that flat against the head. Their lips are thick and entirely encase the lower jaw and symbolic black tongue of this breed. They have a wide chest with wrinkles that continue down from the skull. Their tail is set high and tapers into a curl. They have thick legs and compact feet with well arched toes. This breed has a very short coat that is very weather resistant. The most common colors for this breed are solid shades of sable to brown.

Chinese Shar Pei Health Concerns

This breed is prone to cancer, fever and immune system problems.

Choosing a Chinese Shar Pei

Shar-Peis can do fine in an apartment or home that is in a cool climate. They are very sensitive to heat so this dog should not be left outdoors.
