About the Chow Chow

The Chow Chow, also known as the Bear Dog (xiong gou), was originally created in China to be used as a hunting dog.

Today, this dog is used mainly as a companion dog.

The Chow Chow and Intelligence

Chows are great dogs who are loving and loyal to their owner. These dogs are not recommended for children or in a home with other animals because of their somewhat aggressive nature. These dogs are very stubborn and need a consistent and firm handler to train them. Though they are intelligent they have a mind of their own and don't always like do what they are told. This breed needs to be socialized early to avoid any ovely protective behavior.

Chow Chow Characteristics

The characteristic look of the Chow Chow is a giant ball of fluff with a black tongue. These dogs have a large skull, almond-shaped dark brown eyes, triangular shaped eyes and very broad muzzle. Like their tongue, their nose is also large and black. They have a very short, compact body which is thick and muscular. Their tail is set high and is carried over the back in a curl most of the time. Their leg are thick and sturdy and sit upon round feet with thick toe pads. This breed comes with two coat types: rough and smooth. The rough coat has a thicker, longer coat, feathered hair on the head, legs and tail and a soft undercoat. The smooth coat doesn't have an undercoat and has much shorter hair without any feathering. The most common colors for this breed are red, black, blue, cinnamon or cream.

Chow Chow Health Concerns

This breed is prone to cancer, dysplasia and entropion.

Choosing a Chow Chow

Chow Chows can so well in an apartment or home that is in a cool climate. They are very sensitive to heat so this dog should not be left outdoors.
