About the Curly Coated Retriever

The Curly Coated Retriever was created in Great Britain in the 1800’s as a water retrieving dog.

Today this breed is used as both a companion and gundog.

Curly-Coated Retrievers are extremely intelligent and train easily. They do well in agility events but thrive when working in water. They are very affectionate and loving animals who do great with families and children. They are great protectors and watchdogs. They mature slowly so you must have patience when training this breed. They care also very mischievous when bored so making sure that they are active is essential.

The Curly is noticeably different than the other retrievers because of its square shaped long muzzle. Their almond shaped eyes are black or dark brown in color. Their ears are small and curvier around the corner of the eye. Their jaws are long and very strong with tight lips. Their black nose is wide with large, open nostrils. Their strong neck is slightly arched and expands slightly as it widens into the chest. Their tail is carried straight down and points when they find what they are looking for. Their legs are long, straight, and muscular when the reach the compact round feet. Their coat is also a unique feature. It is filled with tight curls which lay closely on the skin. They are water resistant which help the dog to dry quicker. The ears contain a bit more of loose curl. Although the curls would look great in any color, only black and liver are acceptable colors.

These dogs are prone to dysplasia, epilepsy, and eye problems.

This breed is not suited to live in an apartment because of the amount of energy they need to expend. They are somewhat tireless and their high energy style makes they crave both physical and mental stimulation.
