Introduction to Dog Training Collars

Electric Dog Training Collars
Bark Collars

For many, dog training collars means electric dog collars, however, there are a variety of dog training collars available, all of which do different things and are suited for their own purpose. This article will discuss some of the benefits and uses of some of the varieties of dog training collars.

If you have a puppy, remember that he or she will have an aversion toward a leash at first. It’s best to start a puppy off with a light nylon collar and leash and let them walk around with it before his or her first walk on the leash. They will soon forget all about it and depending on the dog, you may need one of the following dog training collars below.

All of the following dog training collars mentioned below are designed for training purposes only and therefore your dog should soon only need a regular leash and collar. Training involves consistent and proactive effort on your part. Be sure to make clear your intentions with your dog and remember there is expert guidance out there for the stubborn ones. With proper training, you will have pleasant and relaxing walks together.

Electric Dog Training Collars

Electric dog collars are a type of dog training collar that rely on electronic stimulation to correct a behavior in the dog. Its stimulus comes from a battery to deliver the shock. This form of a dog training collar has its troubles, but has been reported to successfully train dogs in obedience and field related activities. Read more about electric dog collars.

Citronella Dog Training Collars

Citronella Collars are another variety of dog training collars that rely on an offensive scent to correct a dog’s behavior. Certain scents and air vibrations are distasteful to dogs which learn to associate a certain behavior with the offensive odor. This dog training collar has had similar reported success as the electric dog collars, but it doesn’t come with the stigma electronic dog collars have.

Halter Dog Training collars

This variety of dog training collar is designed to prevent your dog from pulling you on the leash without causing any pain. It straps around your dogs nose with another around its neck. The leash is fastened to the halter under its chin and to the nose strap. When the dog pulls, its nose is pulled towards you making it difficult for the pulling to persist. The suited purpose for this type of dog training collar is to train your dog not to pull you and is generally a preferred alternative to the choke collar.

Choke Collars

Dog training choke collars are another dog training collar designed to train your canine friend from pulling you while on the leash. The choke collar works by tightening its grip the harder the dog pulls on the leash and makes it uncomfortable for the dog. Choke collars can be very effective during training, but has the potential for misuse. Choke collars are sometimes used as the daily wearable collar creating a hazard for the dog while in play.

Bark Collars

Bark collars are a training collar designed to teach a dog that excessive barking won’t be tolerated. This type of dog training collar, similar to an electric dog collar, will emit a shock to the dog once a pre-defined threshold has been met.

Prong or Pinch Dog Training Collars

The Prong collar is another effective dog training collar that’s designed to train a dog by through correction rather than motivation. The prong collar has blunt prongs on it that when tightened it pinches the dogs skin around its neck. Proper fitting is important so that it doesn’t pinch the trachea. It is not for every dog, and should only be used during obedience training. This training collar causes a discomfort to the dog, but in no way injures it when properly used.
