About the Ibizian Hound

The Ibizan Hound, also known as the Baleric Dog and the Charnique, was brought to the Mediterranean Islands was originally used as both a sighthound and a scenthound.

Today, Ibizan Hounds are used as companion dogs, hunting dogs, and retrieving dogs.

Ibizan Hounds are well rounded, good natured dogs. They are quiet and laid back dogs who are great with families. They get along well with children and other animals in their family but are hesitant towards strangers. They prefer to be in the company of their family are unhappy if kept seperated. These dogs are very sensitive and love to please their owners. They learn quickly and if not kept entertained they can become destructive.

The head of the Ibizan Hound is very long and narrow with an elongated muzzle and flesh colored nose. Their eyes are small ovals in varying shades of amber. In most dogs, the outer rims of the eyes are pigmented to give the eye the appareance of being more alert. Their ears are very large and pointed. Their neck is very long and slender as it their body line. Their tail is thin, low set and is carried in a way that correlates to their mood. Like the rest of their body, their legs are very thin and long yet strong. They have very long toes with tough toe pads. This breed comes in two coat varieties- short and wirehaired. Both are relatively short and are hard to the touch. The most common colors are white or red or a combination of the two.

Although this breed is generally healthy, they are prone to seizures, nerve and muscle disease.

Any type of housing will be fine for the Ibizan Hound although they do require a good deal of exercise. If outside, they need to be in an enclosed area with a very high fence since they can jump very high. They are not to be trusted off leash because they do ave a tendency to wander off and can be very difficult to catch.
