About the Plott Hound
The Plott Hound, also known as the Plott, was created in Germany as a boar hunter.
Today, the Plott is used as a companion dog and a hunting dog.
Plotts are extremely active dogs who love to hunt with their owners. These highly intelligent dogs are very quick learners and love to please. They are great family dogs who get along well with both children and other animals. Though they learn quickly, their noses sometimes get the better of them so training is encouraged at a young age.
The skull of the Plott is somewhat round with a flat area between the eyes, which sit high atop the head. Their long ears hang down beside the muzzle when at rest and are raised when alert. They have a long, muscular neck, well-arched torso and tail which tapers at the end. It is carried high on the dog at all times. They have long, straight legs, which sit atop their round feet with well arched toes. They have a thick, smooth coat, which insulates them from the elements. The most common color of this breed come in a brindle of any shade.
This breed is prone to bloat.
Plott Hounds need a lot of exercise and are not well suited for apartment living. They require a large area where they can run free for an extended period of time, though it needs to be fenced in to avoid the dog wandering off. This dog should not be walked off leash.
