About the Portuguese Water Dog
The Portuguese Water Dog, also known as the Portuguese Fishing Dog, was created in Portugal to aid fishermen in their daily activities.
Today, this water dog is used mainly as a companion dog.
Portuguese Water Dogs love the water. Whether it is summer or winter, these dogs crave the water and love to swim. These dogs are very intelligent and learn quickly but tend to challenge the owner from time to time so training should begin young. They are silly dogs who love to play with their family. They are terrific with children and other animals. They don’t tire easily so they need a lot of entertaining or work to keep them out of trouble.
The skull of this water dog is broad with far set, dark eyes and medium length, heart shaped ears. They have a very broad nose with open nostrils and thick lips. These dogs are very muscular with a broad back and thick tapering tail. Their thick, curly coat covers every inch of the dog including their compact round feet. The most common colors for this breed are either solid or combinations of black, white, and/or shades of brown.
This breed is prone to dysplasia, allergies and heart problems.
Portuguese Water Dogs need a lot of exercise to keep them entertained. They require long walks and swimming as often as possible. Because of their strong mind, this breed thrives on mental challenges as well. They will do fine in either an apartment or home with a yard.
