About the Rhodesian Ridgeback
The Rhodesian Ridgeback, also known as the African Lion Hound, was created in South Africa as a farm dog who would hunt and guard livestock.
Today, the Ridgeback is used mainly as a companion dog.
Rhodesian Ridgeback's are known for their hunting ability. They tend to be quite ferocious when working but once home they are gentle dogs who wouldn't dare hurt a fly. Though these dogs are calm and very even-tempered, they don't do well with children. They are very reserved with strangers but openly affectionate with their owners. They require early socialization and training to avoid becoming overly timid or too possessive. These dogs are very smart and learn quickly. They like to please though they can be stubborn at times. These dogs are great watchdogs that will protect their family at all costs. Though they can learn to get along with other animals, males don't do well with other males.
The skull of this dog is flat and somewhat broad. Their muzzle is long with thin lips and a strong jaw. They have round eyes, which are set far apart on the head, as are their medium sized ears. Depending on the color of the dog, the nose is black or brown with open nostrils. They have a long, strong tail, which tapers at the end, and have a thin but muscular frame. Their legs are thin but muscular and their compact feet have well arched toes with padded toes. Their coat is short and sleek and varies in color from light wheaten to red wheaten.
This breed is prone to dysplasia and cysts.
Rhodesian Ridgeback's can live in an apartment but require a good deal of daily exercise.
