About the Spinone Italiano

The Spinone Italiano, pluralized as Spinone Italiani, was originally created in Italy to be used as a hunting dog.

Today, this Spinone is used mainly as a companion dog.

Spinone’s are very happy and playful dogs. They love to be outdoors with their owners but are weary of strangers. They have a very calm and hardworking personality, which makes them easy to train. This gentle soul gets along great with children and all other animals. Their kindness extends to everyone and they will only become aggressive if they need to.

The Spinone Italiano is a large dog with a square muzzle, rounded nose, round eyes that are set far apart and triangular ears that are carried low. They are a muscular dog with a deep chest, and long neck. They carry their tail down and swing it from side to side when working. These dogs have very powerful legs, which are straight and muscular. Their feet are oval with hard toe pads. In this breed, the coat is very important. It must be a certain length throughout the body. The body is about 2 inches and it is shorter everywhere else. The coat is dense and slightly wavy on the body but is straight around the eyebrows and mustache area. The most common colors are while, white & orange, orange roan with/without markings, white with brown markings, and brown roan with/without markings.

This breed is prone to dysplasia and eye problems.

Spinone’s do great in a home with a yard though they can do well in an apartment with sufficient exercise. They love to be with their families so yard size is not that important.
