About the Tosa

The Tosa, also known as he Tosa-Inu or the Tosa-Ken, was made in Japan and used as a ceremonial fighting dog.

Today, the Tosa is used mainly as a companion dog, though it is still banned in some countries.

Tosa’s are very quite dogs who are affectionate with their family but protective when strangers come around. If not trained properly from an early age this dog can become aggressive. These dogs are very intelligent and they learn very quickly. They respond well to voice commands that their owner gives them. They are good with children but should not be left aloe with them just because of their size. When in public this breed is to be kept away from other dogs because if it chooses to fight the owner will not have control. The Tosa will win any fight it dares to enter.

The Tosa size is massive, as it is known as the Sumo Wrestler of the dog world. They have a large head, a square muzzle, dark almond shaped eyes and long ears, which are rounded at the tips. The ears hang down to the cheek area. When alert, the forehead wrinkles up to alert those around him. They usually have a black nose, which is striking against their short, thick coat. The most common coat colors are red, fawn, brindle, or black with some markings.

This breed is prone to bloat, dysplasia and eye problems.

The Tosa will do great in a home with a yard because they are very capable of meeting their own exercise needs but they do enjoy getting out and taking a walk with their owners.
