About the Australian Cattle Dog
The Australian Cattle Dog, also called the Queensland Heeler, was originally created in Australia because of the need for a herding dog to be able to go long distances with a herd.
Today, this dog is used as both a companion dog and herding dog.
Australian Cattle Dog’s are full of energy and are very loyal to their owner. They tend to be full of energy and always seem willing to work. They love to be herding whether it be with the family cattle or the family children. These dogs are not meant to live solitary lives because they will become bored and destructive. They are reserved towards strangers but friendly once they get acquainted. They are protective of their territory and therefore make good guard dogs.
The Australian Cattle Dog has a skull which is curved between the ears, a long muzzle , tight lips and a black nose. Their oval shaped eyes are dark brown while their tall ears are set apart on the skull and stand straight up when alert. Their legs are somewhat short in length but strong and run into their round feet with well-arched toes that are held close together. Their tail is set low on the body and is raised when working. Like others, this breed has a double coat. The outer coat is straight and rough while the undercoat is longer but still somewhat rough. The most common colors for this breed are either blue, blue-mottled, blue speckled or red speckled.
This breed is prone to deafness and dysplasia.
Australian Cattle Dogs are not suitable for apartment life and do best in a home with a large yard where they can run off some of their energy.
