About the Bassett Hound

The Bassett Hound, was originally created in France to hunt small game with hunters on foot.

Today, this dog is used as both a companion dog and hunting dog.

The Bassett Hound Temperment and Intelligence

Bassett Hounds are very easy going dogs who are fiends with everyone that they meet. They are naturally good dogs who behave well and love to please their owners. They are great with children and other animals but may be a bit stubborn at times. They tend to be vocal so they are not recommended for apartment life. They are hunters by nature and when they get on a trail it is hard to regain their focus so they are not best suited off leash when not in an enclosed area.

Bassett Hound Characteristics

The Bassett Hound has a very distinctive look which makes them recognizable wherever they go. They have a very large head, a large nose with large nostrils, a well arched neck, long hanging ears which slightly fold over and round brown eyes. Their chest is deep and strong, their short legs have elbows which sit close to the chest. Their paws characteristically point outwards with well padded toes. Their tail is carried in a slight curve and despite their short size it is not to be docked. Their coat is short and smooth and loose appearing. Any hound coloring is acceptable for this breed.

Bassett Hound Health Concerns

This breed is prone to bloat and dysplasia.

Choosing a Bassett Hound

Bassett Hounds can live anywhere but is quiet is what you need then this is not the dog for you. They need a fair amount of exercise and like to be free to run off leash when possible.
