About the Bouvier de Flandres Dog

The Bouvier des Flandres is a French/Belgian dog who was originally used as a cattle herding and cart pulling dog. During WWI it was used as in the medical corps for the French Army.

Today the Bouvier is used mainly as a companion dog.

The Bouvier de Flandres and Intelligence

Although the Bouvier may look intimidating, the dog is actually very sweet and gentle. Their good naturedness, responsibility and obedience makes them easy to train. They are natural guard dogs and learn what is expected of them very quickly. Once they learn an instruction given to them by their owner, they will remember it for the remainder of their lives. They are great family dogs and do well with children. Once they have a home they will be loyal to their owners for eternity. They do tend to be somewhat bossy and so they should have an experienced owner.

Bouvier de Flandres Characteristics

Bouviers appear big and strong when looking at them. Their large head seems even bigger when it is accentuated with the beard and mustache. Their oval shaped eyes are dark brown. Their ears sit high atop the skull and appear to be alert at all times. Their muzzle is broad and strong, tapering gradually to the lips. Their nose and lips are broad and black without pigmentation. Their neck is large and thick and widens in to the shoulders. They do have a docked tail which makes the already short body appear shorter in length. Their shoulders are long and straight yet very muscular. Under the legs sit the round compact feet with thick pads and well arched toes. The curly double coat of this dog has a coarse outer layer with a smooth, soft undercoat. The coat is to be short with the beard and mustache mush longer. The long eyebrows accentuate the eyes of the dogs without covering them up. Though they come in many colors, most are salt & pepper, grey or brindle. Small white patches are allowed on the chest.

Bouvier de Flandres Health Concerns

This breed is generally healthy and has a very high pain threshold. Some Bouviers do get dysplasia and cataracts.

Choosing a Bouvier de Flandres

A Bouvier des Flandres is very active dog that can do well in an apartment if it is exercised enough. They do need extensive walks/runs so running alongside their owner is great for them.
