About the Briard Dog

The Briard, also known as the Berger de Brie, was the primary livestock herding dog and guarding dog in France during the Middle Ages.

Today the Briard is used as a companion and security dog.

The Briard and Intelligence

A farm worker and natural herder is what the Briard is. They love to herd whenever they can regardless of what it is. These dogs are playful, kind and obedient yet they are independent thinkers. They love to please their owner but need to know who the boss is from the very beginning. They can be stubborn and sometimes are fearful if they are not raised in the correct environment. These dogs are great with children and tend to ignore those who are not their family members. They need to be entertained and crave affection and attention.

Briard Characteristics

Briards have black or black-brown eyes that are set apart, well opened and calm without being slanted or narrowed. Their ears are set high upon the skull and are to be ½ the length of the skull. They are straight and are always to be covered with hair. Ears can be both natural or cropped. If natural they should sit flat against the head and if cropped then they should be upright and when alert the long hair should fall over the opening. The muzzle has a mustache and beard attached which is set wide. Their nose is square not round with well opened black nostrils. With a broad chest, drawn up abdomen, and a J shaped tail this dog is gorgeous when in motion. Their legs are strong and well muscled with oval shaped paws. The coat of the dog is coarse and dry. It lays down flat and is naturally long and wavy while the undercoat is fine. The hair on the head parts in the middle naturally. Any color combination is permitted other than all white though the most common colors are black, shades of gray and tawny.

Briard Health Concerns

Some lines of Briards are more susceptible to health problems than others. These lines can get cataracts, hip dysplasia and bloat.

Choosing a Briard

Briards are not a dog for everyone. They are full of energy and love to be with their family therefore they require an immense amount of exercise and attention.
