Black Dog Syndrome

A recent study has concluded that black animals in a shelter are less likely to be adopted than animals of other colors. “Black dogs are not adopted as frequently because are feared.” As a black dog owner myself I understand that many people fear the black. I have had people cross the street any times when my dog and I are walking down the street. It is true that black dogs are generally more expensive and can seem more intimidating but the color doesn’t simply just make them mean or evil. In fact, dog behaviorists have shown that “black dogs ward off the ill effects that Saturn has in the alignment of the planets.” Also “black cats are the most good natured of all breeds and are the best mousers”.

Thanks for bringing attention to this important issue. I am a longtime black dog lover and I just can’t believe there are people who would judge a dog by its color alone. Lovers of black dogs will be interested in Pamela Townsend’s book “Black is Beautiful: A Celebration of Dark Dogs”, available through www.pgspca.org (all proceeds benefit her local SPCA).
