Marjorie is exactly right. Jerry Springer is what this horrible show is all about. Get 2 completely polar opposite families and put them in a confined space. Stir the pot a little to get them steaming mad at each other, then stand back and watch the sparks fly! That's what they consider good entertainment.

I knew some people who participated in this show and lived to regret it. RDF/ABC will approach groups like this one and put out the casting call. They try to make you think that the show is going to be a positive experience for everyone involved. The show is heavily edited and scripted.

There is always a "good" guy or family and a "bad" guy or family. Those who are chosen to be the bad people are then cast in a very negative and untruthful light. It doesn't matter that the show hurts the families involved or ruins reputations as long as they get what they want on camera. And they always get what they want on camera.

If you are thinking about participating in this trainwreck of a show, please do some research first. Check on the Internet. If you can, contact some of the families who have participated in the show. Find out first hand about the negative experiences many families have had with Wife Slap..er, Swap. Don't be their next victim.

hehehe

I don't watch much television. It's all 'Jerry Springer' to me. But like a train wreck, sometimes one can't help but look.

There will always be people willing to sell their souls for money, or the mere perception of fame. In fact, our society has changed so much over the past few decades, there's almost nothing resembling the term "shame" anymore; and even the most dasdardly deeds are quickly forgotten, in favor of ratings, sound bites, and guest appearances.

I don't begrudge any television network giving people what they apparently want. If more people watched the shows I watch, there'd be more quality documentaries, and public television would be well-funded. As always, people vote most with their pocketbooks (and their remote controls!).

That reminds me, look for the documetary 'Best Friend Forgotten' on PBS this December, and follow the fate of animals surrendered to shelters.

Psychological effect?? From having someone else come in and try to give your family a different perspective on how to live? Give me a break. Kids are not nearly so fragile as some people seem to think they are. If there's any psychological effect, it's from the inflexible attitudes of most of the grown-ups on the show who won't even consider other types of lifestyles and values. Whether you like the show or not, and I've not watched this particular one, only the one on the other network, it's an interesting take on our society and how different many of us are...and seem to always think we are better than others.

Those shows are horrid. I'd be more concerned about the lasting pshycological affect that participating in such a "cheap entertainment" show would have on your human children! Is the $20,000 for paying for therapy for the next ten years? I am not perfect but work hard to model and instill good values in my children. So they offer 15 minutes of fame for putting my family in jeapardy? It's not worth any price. Good ridance to television that devalues or abuses the foundation of society, our nation - the family. And for money?! Sheesh.

hehehe

I always wondered how much the 'Wife Swap' participants were paid. (The "other" show gives each family $50,000, apparently.)

I don't regularly watch the show, but I'll keep my eyes open for it.

It'll be interesting to see the family that is chosen. Some of the freestyle competitors have achieved a lot in obedience training/competition. I hope they select someone truly talented (and ethical and responsible in the care of their dog[s]).

Presumably, the episode wi'll be extra-amusing, as they'll likely pick someone who's the complete opposite, to swap with...i.e. someone who hates dogs or worse, thinks that responsible dog ownership and training is "cruel" (there ARE those jackasses out there!). ;-)
