Greenies® Finally Being Recalled?

I just received an email from a wholesaler this morning and this is the report:

There has been a recall of the Greenies Dental products. These items are no longer available for ordering through our wholesale site. At this time we don’t have any information as to when they will be available again, but we will let you know. This only affects the hard chewable Greenies and the Greenies Bits which are listed below, not the pill pockets or the treats.

GE-00319 4/ct Jumbo Size Greenies
GE-00317 8/ct Large Size Greenies
GE-00314 14/ct Regular Size Greenies
GE-00311 24/ct Petite Size Greenies
GE-01567 48/ct Teenie Size Greenies
GE-08351 10oz Greenies Lil’ Bits for Pocket Pets
GE-07311 16oz Greenies Lil’ Bits for Dogs

Does this mean a full recall?

Update: In my attempt to find out actual information I made two calls, one to Greenies® and one to Neeps Wholesale. The CSR person at Greenies®, sounding a bit flustered had said “no, they are not being recalled” and transferred me to a voicemail. I then spoke to Dawn of Neeps Wholesale, and although she wasn’t entirely sure of what exactly happened, she does know that Linda, I assume her associate, got an email Friday to pull all those listed above as they were being recalled. Dawn said they were likely to be recalled by the manufacturer, possibly the Heinz corporation as it owns Greenies®. She will hopefully call me back once she speaks to her associate.
So, bottom line, still unsure.

UPDATE:

Spoke with Janet, the Consumer Care Manager at Greenies today and she informed me that it was a reclaim, not a recall and that the difference is voluntary versus mandatory.

Greenies have been re-formulated with soy protien rather than wheat gluten. The new formula is supposed to hit retailers in October. Product with the old formulation is being taken back from retailers by the manufacturer and replaced with the new.
It is inportant to note that Greenies are no more or less dangerous than any product that are designed to be chewed and ingested. The problem with them lies in user error. Dogs that are prone to “gulping” large pieces of anything that is not readily digestilble should not be fed any treat like Greenies or even one of the more digestible competitors.

By the way, my thoughts are that this is a great move by Greenies and it shows that they are listening to their customers. It certainly has taken some time but I’m sure they’ll get back a few of those that used to love their product - including Bear even.

PetSmart did not voluntarily send them back, unfortunately :( My respect for them went down a few more notches. I really wish they hadn’t scared away all the independent pet stores around here!

    Dear sirs,

The new formula for greenise dog chews now contains Gelatin (animal bones)!!!

I strongly suggest that change gelatin to another vegi ingredients such as corn or kelp jelly. Because prue vegi formula is safe and healthy. And vegetarian diet for both human and animal is now a trend in europe and in the whole world. Thank you for your attendtion. Hope we’ll have pure vegi chews and food for dogs very soon.

I was at a PetSmart in NJ yesterday and they still had the old Greenies on display.
The clerk I asked about it went from a “I don’t know, I haven’t heard anything about it” to ” I would have been notified about it” to “they changed their formula last month” All within a matter of about 2 minutes without me saying a word. And he asked multiple times if I wanted to talk to the manager even though I didn’t pursue the issue further than my initial question. Maybe he’s just a nervous , forgetful kid, but it was odd.
I don’t plan on ever buying a greenie product, ever. And now I’m questioning whether to return to PetSmart either.

In response to post #(9… A vegetarian trend for dogs? Why on earth would you want to feed a CARNIVOROUS animal a VEGETARIAN diet? As a canine/feline nutritionist is pains me to see ignorance such as this. Vege diets are great for humans. Not for dogs and cats. Do some research…

I used to work for a pet groomers, and one of our regulars (a Bischon named Curly) came to us one afternoon, and after his bath, he vomited all over the shop floor and then had a very large runny BM with BLOOD in it! We asked the owners if he had been exposed to anything new, and they told us that they had just decided to try Greenies, that they had heard wonderful things about them. I gave them the business card for the vetnarian and told them to throw the greenies away, that they were dangerous. On the other hand, my grandmother has both a pomeranian and a boston terrier that never had a bad reaction to Greenies, but the moment I told her about what had happened to Curly, she stopped using them.

My beautiful toy poodle died this morning after eating a small greenie on Mon. She had them before without problems. I had no idea they had been recalled or that they could harm my beloved pet. I gave them to her once or twice a week. Mon afternoon she vomited. And then again on Tues. morning. I took her to the vet, had x rays taken and they gave her some fluids for dehydration. The vet found no obstruction but her whole GI tract was inflammed. This morning she was obviously much worse. I rushed her to the vet and she died while they were trying to put an IV in her. The autopsy revealed that the greenie had caused so much distress in her intestines that the jejunum had become twisted and worked its way into the foramen of the mememtum. Something the vet said he had never seen in his practice. I am devastated! Please do not give your dogs this horrible stuff. The recall is not stupid–I wish I has known about it.

I am so sorry about all these dogs. Our beloved Bella, a 5 month old Japanese Spaniel died on Friday during the night. A piece of a greenie had lodged in her esophagus and even though she vomited could not get it out. These things are HORRIBLE. You think you are doing the right thing by buying allegedly healthy products for your pets and to find one dead is one of the most painful things that you can experience. My sympathies to all of you.
