Rules on Chaining Dogs to Trees and Fences Starting to Change
At some point in our lives, everyone has seen a dog tied to a pipe, fence, or tree to prevent them from going to far. This is common practice for some people but recently the views on this tradition have changed. Some things that dog advocates would like to change are the length of time that a dog can be tethered, the objects that a dog can be tied to, and the type of chain used. According to dog behaviorists, “Dogs are sociable animals. They don’t do well tied up. They are not yard ornaments. They need social interaction and stimulation.” Many in favor of this law say that tying up a dog for too long can make them more likely to become depressed, bored, aggressive and is much more likely prey on innocent animals or neighbors. Some cities already have rules in place governing the tethering of dogs. Dania Beach has created a rule which allows dogs to be tethered from 9-5 with someone watching them. In California, some cities have similar rules and in Okaloosa County animals can’t be “chained, tied, fastened or tethered to dog houses, trees, fences or other stationary objects.”
It’s nice to finally see that people recognize the cruel nature of chaining a dog up to a tree exposed to the elements… it’s even better to see cities changing policies. Unfortunately, too many cities still haven’t even noticed.
Here’s a solution: tie yourself up to a tree from 9 to 5. Tell us how you liked it! (personal rant)
