Today, dog owners must be extra careful about maintaining their dog’s health and preventing their pet from being exposed to disease spread. There are two life-threatening diseases known as canine parvovirus and canine distemper that are increasingly reaching the digestive systems of our healthy pets. These diseases can cause dogs to have partial or total paralysis, irreparable nerve damage, vomiting and diarrhea. Without catching the disease early enough or providing your pet with extensive hospitalization, death can occur within 72 hours.

The increased spreading of such diseases is due to people not picking up their dog’s waste. That’s right! When someone doesn’t pick up after their dog, your pet’s chances of getting infected with one of the diseases are increased. You may think that because you own a healthy pet, not picking up after them won’t necessarily contribute to the spread of diseases such as canine parvovirus. Yet, signs of the disease and symptoms may take up to 10-14 days to show up making not picking up dog waste very risky.

In matter of fact, not picking up after your dog is also very harmful to the environment. Unattended dog waste gets washed down into our stormdrain systems, which then leads into our local waterways and ocean untreated. The bacteria found in the fecal matter affects our aquatic life, the tourism industry, our economy, and most importantly those who swim at our beaches. This consequence not only affects our pet’s health, but also our own. The contamination and pollution that is created due to unattended dog waste is a whole other problem in itself.

Recently, in Millersville, Maryland, the county’s animal control shelter had to temporarily shut down its pet adoption program after coming across its 3rd dog that was infected with canine parvovirus. The dogs were not showing any symptoms when they were adopted, but developed them quickly after they were brought into the shelter. Two of the dogs had to be put down and the animal control shelter conducted a thorough cleanup of the facility’s cages and equipment while using a special bleach-based solution. The executive director of the shelter spoke on the disease stating, "It's one of those viruses that is very contagious. It's in the environment. People can track it on their shoes. It’s very, very contagious.”

Situations such as the one that took place in Millersville, Maryland are occurring everywhere, including in your own community. It is important that as dog owners, we do our part and pick up after our pet and at the same time remind our neighbors and friends to do the same. This is especially important because if your neighbor isn’t picking up after their dog, you and your healthy pet has the potential to be affected by their negligence. Remember to do the right thing. Pick up after your dog and continue to protect our pets and environment.
