The AKC is worried about newest movies

It seems that whenever a unique looking dog is in the spotlight everybody wants one. Well with the two latest Disney movies out, The Shaggy Dog and 8 Below, interest has sparked in the super cute Bearded Collie and the spirited Siberian Huskies. The national breed clubs have been trying to get the word out and remind people to really research a breed before you buy it. The AKC has also been trying to let people know that “seeing and enjoying a dog on the big screen is one thing, but people need to realize that owing that breed may be a completely different experience. Those who want to ass a dog to their own family need to understand the commitment involved in owning a dog, select a breed that fits their life style, and learn as much as possible about the different breeds before contacting a reputable breeder.”

    Yes, and righly so. When Weims first began appearing on television and in books (OK, Wegman’s books are adorable), the local Weim Club I was a member of at the time did a campaign. Groups of us would take our dogs to parks and other public places. We’d set up a table and used the opportunity to educate people on living with a Weim. I would like to think that it made a difference… While it’s been my breed of choice for over 30 years, Weims are not for everyone. I think that can be said for any breed as they all have their specific characteristics. I believe that part of our responsibility in having an interest in dogs and opening our hearts and homes to them, no matter the breed or mix, is to use every opportunity to educate. When that person aproaches to pet our adorable companions, we can use the opportunity to talk about our friends and how living with them affects our lives…the good as well as the challenges.

    The Humane Society in Charlotte had a billboard campaign with a picture of a dalmation and the words “101 only works in the movies” - promoting spay & neuter. I thought it made it’s point very well — that the reality of owning a dog goes beyond picking out a “cute puppy”.

    Interstingly, the dog show’s themselves have the same effect as the movies do. A couple of years ago when Josh the Newfoundland took the show at Westminster, we took part in educating the public much the same way.
