The Amazing Skidboot has Passed Away

Tom just posted a comment on our post about Skidboot. I thought since we’ve all been touched by the wonderful Skidboot, we all should see his note:

“We were not ready to start our blog just yet but this needed to be mentioned. Skidboot, an amazing dog, has left us. This was an outstanding example of the relationship between owner and dog that faced many an issue and overcame them through effort.
We have put together a brief tribute to Skidboot and David named “Skidboot Has Left Us” on YouTube along with a link to the Texas Country Reporter segment.

Skidboot was neither a Briard (a herding dog of French origin) nor a Gordon setter (a birddog) that we will be writing about in our blog. He and David are an excellent example of that wide and diverse world of partnerships between man and dog that we will also explore.

I first met Skidboot and David at the State Fair of Texas in the late 90’s. It was amazing even then to see the close partnership between them even then. I remember last fall when their story seemed to be everywhere on the internet as well as TV. One of the best segments was the Texas Country Reporter piece by Bob Phillips .They appeared with Leno, Letterman, Oprah and many others. Internet hits were over four million.

The segment points out how Skidboot was not an easy dog to handle in the beginning (a trait that can also be found in both Briards and Gordons). It took work on David’s part to bring out the best in Skidboot. The segment also pointed out that the dog was going blind and the future was uncertain. Monday (3/26/07) David was talking to one of the Dallas radio folks with his “bittersweet news” – Skidboot was dead but now he could see and frolic with the likes of Lassie and Rin Tin Tin.

David will not be alone in missing his partner, Skidboot - millions of others will also!

I am at a loss for words to express our feelings for such wonderful beings such as SkidBoot and my little spooner. If they ran our world instead of the powers that be we would have no worries. Both are at the bridge now, Waiting for us. GOD Bless you Dave.

I am very sorry for the loss of such a wonderful dog. I too had an Australian Cattle Dog, and he died on Christmas Eve of 06′. They are very smart animals, and when you have a bond with them it is just like having a child. Skidboot will be missed dearly. As will my dog Ranger. It is sometimes hard to find a perfect dog, but, you will never forget the times you shared and the smiles they brought. RIP.

I know the pain this man has suffered. I too had a “One of a Kind” Aussie Cattle Dog named Dooley.
He was my friend, my companion and someone I could talk to and it seems he understood. With deep dark eyes and a friendly paw on my hand he was there when I needed reassurance and companionship.
Like I said, One of a Kind.

Rest in peace old friend, and say hello to Dooley when you meet.

A friend just sent me a video of Skidboot today, though I have seen him many times on TV and video, I just realized he had passed away. We had to say goodbye to our girl two years ago on New Years Eve after she was with us for 16 yrs. A wonderful girl we adopted half retriever/half chow, when she was 7 wks old. someone had left here in a ditch, with two brothers who didn’t make it. It was the saddess and hardest moment of our lives, as I know it must have been for you both. We think of her all the time as I am sure you think of Skidboot. Our wonderful animal family members who are like our children, they are so lovable, smart, forgiving, caring and have bigger heart than most humans I come across. My thoughts and prayer are with you, you can feel the love that you both had/have for Skidboot, when you watch the videos. Thank you so much for sharing him with all of us, he has show all of us what amazing things that Gods wonderful creatures ,aniaml and human alike, can do and he gave me a guarteed SMILE on our faces everything we saw him.
Again Thank you and God Bless. Debbie (Houston, Texas)

My friend just sent me the video detailing Skidboot’s wonderful talents. Watching it, I cried, feeling so uplifted to see a dog with such talent and understanding to the human relationship, yet sorrow when I heard he was going blind and his future was uncertain.
After seeing the video, I logged in to the net, and was hit with the fact that his life had ended.
I am a true dog lover, and as I type this, my tears flow as I think of him, and his owners.
God bless Skidboot and his owners. Your life has been blessed, as his was.

I just recently got a puppy and was telling my children about Skidboot and what a WONDERFUL dog he was !!! Not knowing at the time he had passed. I went to look up his videos on You Tube to show them and found out. I just broke down in tears. There are not words to describe how wonderful he was and how much he will be missed by so many !!!! Who would have thought that one dog could touch as many hearts around the world as he did?!?!? There will never be another dog like him. I know the his memory will live on for many years to come. I know he’ll live in mine forever and he will truly be missed !!!! My heart goes out to his owners and I want to thank them for sharing him with the world !!!! What a wonderful gift !
