Banning one dog will without a doubt set a precedent to ban another breed, and another... and another.

Your dog could be next!

Great story. Heroic dog!

Personally, when we are at the park with our 150 pound St. and our 65 pound IWS, we don't have issues with the other medium sized and big dogs, the ones we have trouble with are the little dogs who come running over on their flexi leads while their owners are doing everything but watching them, growling and snarling at our two dogs who are usually in a down stay next to myself and my husband(both our dogs are medical service dogs) and then the owners thing it is cute that their precious little dog wants to play with the big dog and have no clue that this is not play behaviour, this is aggression plain and simple.
Not all, but most bites humans receive from dogs is because the human did not heed the warnings that the dog gave before the dog bit. Dogs bite normally as a last resort, when all other warnings have been ignored or on occassion when the human has done something incredibly stupid. Ie. one coworker as we we leaving the lunchroom decided that running up behind me and then jumping in between me and my service dog and getting right down in her face and screaming at her to attack his friend was funny. Lucky for him she is a well trained service dog and her reaction was to back away from him and then turn to me to handle the situation. Had it just been someone's pet he was risking a serious bite incident which would have been totally his fault.
Bite accidents involving children are usually a combination of the child doing something to the dog, ignoring the warning signs and the parent not being responsible in monitoring the interaction between the dog and the child and 90% of dog bites cto children could be prevented if there had been an adult monitoring the situation and separating the child from the dog before it escalated to the point of the dog retaliating by biting. It's amazing what some parents will allow their children to do to a dog and expect the dog to simply sit there and take it.

I suppose the quoted study didn't bother to look at the number of dog bites from small breeds, or from labs, cockerspaniels or other familiar breeds that are just as likely to bite and that they were able to artificially inflate the "pit bull" bite rates by combining a number of different breeds that are commonly referred to as pit bulls which are not such as the staffordshire and mastiffs.
Good job to this "pit" bull and their owner.

According to the Clifton study, pit bulls, Rottweilers, Presa Canarios and their mixes are responsible for 74% of attacks that were included in the study, 68% of the attacks upon children, 82% of the attacks upon adults, 65% of the deaths, and 68% of the maimings. In more than two-thirds of the cases included in the study, the life-threatening or fatal attack was apparently the first known dangerous behavior by the animal in question. Clifton states:

You are crazy to have a pitbull. You do not have the right to take your childrens life into jeapordy. 386,000 people are sent to the emergency room every year, with a big majority coming from pitbulls. I will shoot them on sight.

I have 2 pit bulls. They are the best dogs that i have ever owned! I am in the process of adopting a 2 year old little girl! My dogs absolutly adore her they protect her if she is upset they sit by her side! They follow her everywhere, one in front of her and the other behind her like they are protecting her from every angle. This story has really touched my heart and believe the the only things that should have bsl laws is bad owners! GREAT JOB BLEU!

I agree with Ruby. It's all in a way the dog is raised. Dogs can be aggressive, but if treated well, he can also be protective.

i really wish more hype about these kinds of stories would get into mainstream media because so many breeds of dogs are given a bad reputation as being aggressive. in my hometown, several breeds were actually banned including rottweilers and pitt bulls. i have a lab rotteweiler mix and he weighs over 100 lbs and is the biggest baby youll ever meet. i think that its just stupid to claim that some dogs are born mean...they are NOT born mean they are bred and raised to be mean if you treat a dog with respect and love and care for the animal then no matter what the breed, the dog will be a sweetheart! more people need to realize this!

This is only good thing I have ever heard about Pit Bulls. I don't know how many babies Pit Bulls have killed or injured but I know it is a lot more than one. I have had kids in my office with Pit Bull bites. Usually when a dog bites a human it knows it has fucked up and will only bite once. Hell my dog bit me while playing not a hard bit (she is a great dane remember) and I bleed but it didn't hurt that much but you could see it in her reaction she didn't want to come near me at first she must have thought I was going to beat her butt not something I usually do. But an older dog that has exhausted all the other methods of training or need his training reinforced A fev swatts on the nose gets there attention. You don't have to rub their nose in the poop just them to it and they know.

I wish there were more stories like this to hit the mainstream media. We are inundated with the hype and fear surrounding these wonderful dogs when in actuality they are scapegoats for a much larger issue - that of irresponsible dog ownership.
