Tips for those with hunting dogs
Hunting season is almost here, and if you’re the hunting type, you might want to take your big dog with you. But don’t think that if your dog is a hunting breed they will be ready to go right away. According to the New York Star Gazette, people should start conditioning their dogs at least six weeks before attempting to hunt with them. Owners should start by training their dog in short 15 minute sessions and build up to frequent longer sessions. They can condition their dogs anywhere that they can run around safetly, but should be sure to vary locations if they plan on hunting in hilly terrains.
When you are ready to take your dog out hunting, make sure that you know their limits, and always come prepared. Your dog should have a tick preventative, and you should bring a first aid kit along with you for every hunting session. Also be sure to have plenty of water on hand. And, according to veterinary technician Judy Zeigler, you can help keep your dog from getting hypoglycemic in the field by adding a bit of sugar or honey to their water, and can bost their electrolytes on hunting day by giving them a little bit of unflavored pedialyte.
