Dog Bowls to Avoid Bloat
What Dog Bowls Are Good for Avoiding Bloat?
Bloat and Dog Bowls
Question Comment 1: Ok, so I know that I am easily confused when it comes to care of a dog, but that said, I am trying to educate myself best as I can. As there is now information stating that you should not elevate the food bowl I am wondering what everyone else is doing. To elevate or not to elevate, that is the question ( :
Wild Dogs and Domestic Dogs
Comment 2:
In the wild, wolves and other canid species eat with their heads down to the food source, or if they feel no threat, they lie next to their kill and eat at leisure. While I'm sure they gulp air at some point or other, no one except in Sanctuaries or Zoos reports them affected by bloat. This common sense approach to the problem led me to put the dishes on the floor, but teach dogs to eat slowly when confronted with gulping behaviors!
Sometimes, we get so involved in these "bred" dogs that we forget their natural states.
Comparisons
Comment 3: I must differ with you here. Would you argue that we should look to the wolf for dog temperament, dog love of swimming? How effectively would a pack of Papillons run down a prey animal?
Modern highly bred dogs are highly specialized creatures and I believe it should not be a given that anything appropriate for their wolf ancestors is necessarily appropriate for canis familiaris.
Information
Comment 4: It's obvious human breeding of dogs has radically altered some aspects of dog physiology (think wolf muzzle compared to Pug "muzzle," to say nothing of size & color), but it sure would be interesting, for those of us who love a breed susceptible to bloat, to see a study that compares the digestive tract of wolves and other wild canids to that of comparable domestic canines. It's been too long since I was a wildlife biology major for me to even venture a guess, but I have to admit I sometimes wonder, when I see a Saluki or Borzoi or Greyhound, how they even fit all that "equipment" in there ;)
Not that I'm suggesting those breeds are necessarily comparable to wolves or other wild canids; in terms of anatomy, I'd compare a Newfie to Canis Lupus a heck of a lot sooner.
