*AKC classifications are underlined

Companion Dog/ Toy: Usually very small dogs whose only job is to be in the company of their humans (Chinese Crested)

Herding Dog: Active dogs who are known for their herding ability (Australian Shepherd)

Gun Dog/ Sporting Dog: Active dogs who love retrieving on land or in the water (Golden Retriever)

Guardian Dogs: Dogs who love to watch over people, property, or livestock (Great Pyrenees)

Non-Sporting Dogs: These are dogs whose purpose differs from all of the others mentioned though they are too different to give one general classification. (Bulldog)

Scent Hounds: Dogs with excellent noses and a high prey drive (Bloodhound)

Sight Hounds: Dogs with excellent eyes and a high prey drive (Saluki)

Terriers:

1- Traditional: Active dogs who chase fast moving prey (Yorkshire Terrier)

2- Bull Terriers: Dogs used mainly for fighting (Pitt Bull)
