My Dog Doesn't Want to Eat Dog Food

Question Comment 1: My Dog, the one who used to be sick, has now, over the last several months, turned into the dog that turns her nose up at her food. She has, , been eating Purina Pro Plan large breed for puppies. I usually feed her in the morning and evening. About six months ago, she started turning her nose up and walking away. I (probably mistakenly) started putting some yummies mixed in with it. She loves scrambled eggs and spinach for breakfast. She likes mixed vegetables, peanut butter, yogurt, just about any human food. With yummies mixed in she would gobble it up. But now, she simply eats around (or licks) until she gets the goodies and leaves the rest.

If I leave it sitting all day, which I don’t like and don’t normally do, she will get hungry around 8 at night and go eat what is in the bowl. I would prefer that she just eat at the appropriate times. So, any ideas that you have I would appreciate. She is healthy otherwise. I don’t know if I should change foods, try feeding only once a day, just not worry or what. The funny thing is, when we go to friends or family or she goes to the babysitter, she gobbles up the other dogs plain old dry (CHEAP) kibble just as fast as she can.

People Food

Comment 2: Ah yes, the good old "if I don't eat my food, I'll get people food" trick ... kind of like with little kids, they make mommy worry by not eating, so they get the "good" stuff instead of the brocolli! When she gets hungry, she'll eat. Oftentimes, even now, at 11, Zulu won't eat the "breakfast" but will scarf the breakfast feed down when I get home from work at 5 or 6, then ask for dinner at 8 or 9. But, sometimes, I'm not hungry or in the mood to eat either, in the mornings, so eat dinner then have a snack later. Unless you see a weight drop or some other overt change when she's ignoring her food, let her be, I think.
