Dogs Under Home Insurance

Question Comment 1: I have a question regarding the Home insurance policies in Canada and the Quebec province in particular. Is the liability for your dogs (in case they injure somebody, cause a car accident, etc - usual stuff) included or do you have to take a separate insurance policy? Are insurance policies a pain as much as they can be in the US with some breeds?

Comment 2: Not sure about Quebec, the rules are often different there. I live in the Yukon and my homeowner's liability insurance covers my dogs as well, as long as there is no commercial activity. To run dogsled tours out of my yard, I have to get a different policy. My insurance agent has been to my house, to inspect a new woodstove. He never even mentioned the 23 dogs running around the yard.

Comment 3: I don't have a problem with my home insurance. They didn't ask if I own a dog or pet and it is such a good policy, I suspect the do cover just about anything. Shop around for home and/or car insurance. We think most insurance is pretty high but we have an excellent broker who shopped around for us and we are extremely happy with his recommendation. Our other ins. co. cut us off with no warning and no reason. We didn't even make a claim.

I do have medical insurance for my dogs. It comes at various levels of coverage. Because Reign is quite healthy, I have her on one of the "economical" plans but can move her up to others at any time. The lower cost plan that I'm on covers injury to another animal that was caused by my pet. I'm not sure of the amount of coverage off hand. The next plan up covers $25,000 " if your pet causes damage to property or another pet." Plus it covers a whole lot of other stuff. I wouldn't be without pet insurance now that I have it.

With our dog, we spent over $10,000 in 3 1/2 years. Thank goodness we had the plan. It is called Pet plan. They offer something to people who recommend them to others. I don't know what it is - never paid much attention to it but I have recommended it to a lot of people. Whether they bought the plan, I don't know.
