: Did you know that Dogs Bark?
: lins_saving_grace August 07, 2006, 02:07:17 AM
Oh I'm angry again!  My neighbor showed up at my door Friday night with a 6 foot 2 by 4 to tell me that the association wants us to move our dogs fence into the back yard because the people walking by the house are afraid when Lady and Grace bark.  The same people mind you who told me it was ok when I asked if they had a problem with my dogs.   OH I WAS LIVID!
So we argued on the porch for an hour because his mamma's boy is the friend of the kid who got bitten by the Golden and now they're all afraid for their lives.  and this 10 year old neighbor won't play in his yard because he's afraid of my dogs who (guess what) bark.
I was so shocked and basically called them all hypocritical small minded backstabbers.  if he's not a complete idiot he got that point.
So we got a qoute on the cost of moving the fence and are going to ask the association to pay for it.  It'll cost over $200 basically.
I'm still mad.  That's breed discrimination .  no one's afraid of the pit bull up the road or the big mixed breed who both bark at me.  it's just irrational.

I had no idea that dogs barked.  At least mine never bark except when....
-they see something on the other side of the fence no matter how far away it is
-they think they see something on the other side of the fence no matter how far away it is
-they smell something so they think there might be something on the other side of the fence no matter how far away it is
-they hear something so they think there might be something on the other side of the fence no matter how far away it is
-they imagine any of the above.

OR

-simply because it pleases them to hear their own voices.

I had some trouble with my neighbor not liking the fact that Rocco was always barking at him so I introduced him to the dogs and they now love him but they sometimes still bark at him.  He now shows them off to his friends and talks about how they are his buddies.  It probably won't be that easy for you but you can always try and make the dogs seem more approachable like I did.
: Re: Did you know that Dogs Bark?
: lins_saving_grace August 07, 2006, 05:31:39 AM
They won't come over and make friends.  I've begged everyone to.
My point exactly.  He said he didn't want to breed discriminate, but it's the type of dogs they are...blah blah.  and when I mentioned that the pit bull barks at me...he said "Oh I know that dog".  He contradicted himself 100 times in this conversation.
now I'm worried that someone will go to my house while I'm at work today and take them.    ot worse....leave a post it on their collars. :)

wow, they came over with a 2x4??? that seems a bit extreme....
YES!  a 6 foot long 2 x 4!!!  And his kid (who's scared of them) was in my driveway begging the dogs to come see him.  He ran when they did.  It's like they wanted to set us up for a bad situation.

What a moron!...& I would DEFINTIELY & IMMEDIATLY file a police report...I'd say coming over with a 2 x 4 to confront is would be a deemed a threat by an law enforcment agency!..Also, then if anything else happens you will have this documented...I t is a good thing they don't live near us...Samson & Pippin gaurd that fence like they will kill someone...Gawd this p.o.'s me!!! >:(

This makes me sooooo mad! Who do these people think they are - and coming over with a 6 ft. 2x4.... gggrrrrrrrrr!  Filing a police report for your own protection is a good idea.

Did the HOA board vote on moving your fence or is this just the independant neighborhood intimidation squad?

Oh Lin - this sucks.

I am boiling mad right now!
: Re: Did you know that Dogs Bark?

I think that if the dogs scare people then they shouldn't come in your yard.  If the kids in your neighborhood are so stupid that they will go in anyone else's yard that has any dogs then they are probably stupid enough where the neighbors should put huge fences up to block the kids from the street.  Definately file a report.  Not that bring a 2x4 would work at my house Rocco would try to take it because he loves to carry around wood and Maia would be scared because she is scared of big anything.

the HOA voted to ask us to do this (putting the girls in the backyard so they can't see them).  and if we do they will too since they can't ask us to do that without being willing to do it too. I demaded that if we do anything.  And I have a call into an attorney now.
The guy, Todd, isn't into the whole HOA thing but because of the dog thing he knew was going to be a topic soon with the HOA he went to the meeting and was elected to come over.  it took him three weeks a a few bottles of beer (i smelled it on his breath) before he had the courage to come knock.

can I file a report and not press charges and he'd never know I filed the report?
There's a County Sheriff 2 doors down, but I don't trust that he'd be impartial.  He's got little kids.

Lin that is HORRIBLE.  Definitely file a police report ASAP.  No one has any right to come onto your property with a 2x4.  This guy doesn't sound all there in the head and you need to make sure that you, and your girls, are protected.

I'm so sorry your neighbors are being sucky.  What is it with sucky neighbors?  We should just be able to put them all in a big barrel, and throw them in the ocean.  >:(

It's just plain Stupid.

I'm a little confused.

Did the HOA actually vote to ASK you to put the girls in a fenced back yard? Because, if they're just asking, say no. They can ask anything they like, but as long as you're abiding by the bylaws and your dogs haven't hurt anyone, you don't have to accede to a request.

But keep calling the attorney.  If they haven't already made a written demand, maybe he can put some kind of estoppel on them even making the demand, because the HOA's harrassment is interfering with your quiet enjoyment of your home.

Call the police, and make a report of a drunk harrassing you, brandishing a 2x4 as a weapon.

As far as the drunk with the 2x4, I'd find him when he was sober and let him know that you've made a police report, and the next time he shows up on your doorstep with a board, you're not going to wait to call the police on him until after he leaves; you're going to lock the doors, and call 911 to report a man with a weapon harrassing you for the SECOND time.

It's time to stop being nice to these jerks. Show  them that they'd rather mess with your dogs than you, Lyn.

That bites that the attorney didn't call back today!...I understand that you have to live there but I also agree with this last post...Someone showing up with a 2x4 to confront you is a threat & shouldn't be seen as anything else...It is really too bad though that these morans have put you in this situation!...B.t.w., I am wondering, maybe this guy was just drunk & trying the vigilante thing?...Hav eyou actually heard from the HOA?

Last night's events.  nothing major really.  I was in the backyard with the girls doing some training and we made progress.  so I took them for a walk knowing there would be people around.  more good practice.  So we come to a house with people and dogs and I made the girls sit and stay.  they did good and all were impressed.
On the way home the little dog, the owner and her little kids walked by  us and Lady went bonkers when the dog barked at her.   I got them settled down but this is the lady who's most afraid of the dogs.  My problem is I can't train them not to react to people if they don't see people all the time.  and these people won't understand that at this point.  I think they know I'm trying though.  God I hope anyway.

the HOA "asked" me to consider this as a solution to their fears.  I told them that they'd have to amend the master deed really.  But I told him we'd think about it.  I'm going to call the Sheriff's Dept. today.  My husband asked me not to file a report then changed his mind last night.

Okay, I may just be really pessimistic, but it really sounds like that guy and his boy were planning on getting you (and your dogs) in major trouble. The fact that he came WITH a 2x4 sounds like he was definitely expecting something. And it sounds like the little boy was coached into instigating something with the dogs. Thank goodness your dogs are better than that. At this point, I wouldn't feel badly about anything. They've already gone about it all the wrong way. Have any of them EVER talked to you about your dogs before? UGH this is why I hate these damn communities. People want everything to be their way, and they think they can order everyone else around.

Lin, just an idea I'm throwing out but is there anyway you can walk Lady & Grace in another neighborhood until they get better at not barking at things?...I know we have a place in the town we moved from where alot of people walk dogs & even go to walk...It's a very long avenue so nobody knows if you really don't live there. (which really doesn't matter anyway...lol!) I just thought if maybe you could practice socialization with people & dogs you don't know & who don't know you it might help in your neighborhood.. .Like I said, just an idea...Does Lady know the "leave it" command?...That's what I use on Samson & Pippin when we walk & they are overly interested & excited about something that makes them act like knuckleheads.. ..I just keep saying it as we walk by each time it looks like they are interested in "getting" something or someone. ::)
Hopefully with some work on your part this will just blow over but still find out what the attorney has to say & I am thinking because the HOA is just asking that legally they don't have a leg to stand on...Just say no. ;D

ok!  i called the Kent Co. Sheriff's Dept. and asked if I should file a police report.  he said i can if i want to but it might make things worse.  If the guy comes over again tell him if he's got a big stick you will call the cops and then do it. no one has reported the dogs and there's nothing in the by laws that state I have to have them in the backyard.  go to the HOA and talk to them and go from here.
I'm going to work with the girls in other parts of town and keep them away from the neighbors until they are a little less spaztic.

OK...I called a trainer.  He said I could have him come to the house and show me what I'm not doing to establish my authority.  but...dogs bark to chase things away.  When people walk by the yard, the girls bark...the people walk away...the girls have succeeded.
The barking and growling in the street is me not having complete authority.   I've come a long way in the last 4 days though.  my husband said they are like different dogs and to keep it up.
Every dog should be able to sit and stay for 30 minutes no matter the distractions.  so if I have to sit in the middle of Dio Dr. with the girls at ease with distractions coming and going, dogs barking and people walking...I WILL!
I am so proud of the girls though.  I've been going outside with them for 2 hours a night teaching them come, stay, sit, no, pay attention, etc.  Lady looks at me before she makes a single move now.  Grace..well she'll get it..but she's got pay attention, sit and come down pat.  She does what Lady does so if I can get Lady to stop barking and lunging Grace won't do it either.
I'm ashamed of myself though.  I babied them too long.
God I'm exhausted.

Way to take control of the situation Lin!...I am VERY proud of you!!! ;D
Thank you!  It's discouraging when they screw up once after so much work though cuz the neighbors only see the bad stuff now.  :)

I am so proud of all the work you are doing.  It is too bad more parents don't take this much time with their skin-kids!

I was wondering if you had gotten with the HOA at a monthly meeting about electing to send a drunk man with a weapon to your door?  If they are worried about a couple of barking, confined dogs, what about a person walking around their neighborhood drunk with a weapon?  ??? ??? ???

You know, I believe that there is a law that if you are threatned on your own property you can legally shoot the buttholes...Yo u need a sign that says, "Don't worry about the barking dogs, beware of the owner packin' heat!"  ;)  ;D  I sure hope that things get worked out soon in your favor.

I thought about going to the HOA president...bu t 1.) we didn't want to stur up any more trouble.  and 2.) the HOA is against us no matter what.  the cop told me to do that when I called to SD and I told him the same thing.
Next time he shows up at the door...I will call the police.
I don't go to the HOA meetings cuz they talk about speed bumps and tall grass.  And this last one wasn't published or made known really. They usually post a sign in the street the day of the meeting and put it in the newsletter which we didn't see.  but everyone else knew about the meeting by word of mouth I guess (and they simply forgot to tell us about it and that there would be the dog issue coming up).

Did the attorney call you back?  Because it sounds like you're going to need it.  Clandestine meetings are almost always a bad, bad thing.  You need to find out if there's anyway to stop this before they have any more public meetings where they try to push an amendment thru.

I know you hate confronting people, but you're going to have to step up and make these people deal with you. You've got a stupid woman with an out of control rat that PROVOKES other dogs who hasn't had a word said to her who's on the inside of the anti-Grace and Lady lobby, pushing the issue.

Besides the trainer, what about obedience certifications?  If you can shove certifications in these people's faces, then your claim that your dogs are reacting to provocation should be bolstered.

One of the girls that works on another floor here is on the side of the devil regarding a pit bull in her complex, and that dog's owner pretty much shut the condo association up at their meeting on Monday night by waving the dog's obedience certificates and CGC in their faces. She's been frothing at the mouth about 'that dangerous dog is allowed to go anywhere he wants because of that piece of paper' ever since.  You can't even get in an elevator with her without hearing how dangerous the dog is, yada yada.

Do you have any papers that you can wave at your stupid HOA?

both attorneys I called said this is not a case they would handle.  I'm hoping that thing at my neighbors house last night was just a party light party thingy or something stupid.  but they can't shut me out like that.
I called a trainer and am considering starting obedience training.  there's a class starting on the 13th of Sept. that's the earliest I can get into.

I just wanted to say congrats on all the progress you have made with your girls.  Just my 2 cents: I would call the lawyers back and ask if they know of someone that will handle your case or can advise on this issue.  The other thing I would do is walk along the road around the HOA members homes.  God, knows one of them has a dog that fence runs and barks and take pictures of it.  If they want to force you to move your fence line then you have evidence that their dog is "dangerous" also.  If the guy comes back doing his imitation of "Standing Tall" get pictures of him and have your camera time and date stamp them.

I've had my camera ready for Todd to come marching back with his stupid stick. I will not negociate with drunken barbarians.  I made up my mind about that.
I hope the people in the neighborhood are starting to notice their progress.  I talk loud enough and everyone has had their windows open at night too.  I've picked certain houses to stop in front of and do sit stay's and last night i saw 2 peoples looking out.  and the guy this morning gave me a little smile.  :)
I shall call the lawyers back and see if they can recommend someone.

I thought we had graduated to walking in the street with people last night.  And for the most part the girls did great.  Every distraction I made them sit and lay down till they paid no attention to it.
Then right before we got the the driveway and small family of bikes passed us fast.  We sat and stayed.  the mom said thank you.  Then Grace pounced.  They sped off at light speed saying "those stupid dogs".
but we made it 1/2 way through the insident before exploding.  that's progress.

You'd have been fine if she hadn't said thanks, I'll bet. Why do other people have to have manners?  ;)

You've come MILES in a really short time.  Don't get discouraged, and don't stop walking with them.  Get their dad to bike along side you and talk to you so they get used to the bike and the talking now.  And kiss they girls for being so good!  :-*  :-* One for each.

Thank you.  I need all the encouragment I can get.  I'm so tired.  but I see the change in them...it's a huge difference.
But yeah...i'd a been ok if she hadn't said a word.  it's not like it's not obvious I'm training them.
I'll give em 2 kisses each.
