: Breeding...need answers...help

Hi Everyone,
It's been a longtime since I have been here.  We recently lost our 5  1/2 year old Newf on Christmas Eve.:(  Ben has had a difficult road since he was a puppy.  He had hip dysplasia and had surgery at 3 years old one of his hips then at 3 he was also diagnosed with Epilepsy and had to start a course of Phenobarb daily.  Well his seizures got the best of him and after having seizures for 2 days we were unable to break the cycle and had to resort to the only humane thing we could do for our friend.  He went to sleep peacefully with some help from our wonderful vet. Needless to say this has been a horrible Christmas and a very difficult time for our family.  Anyways I told our breeder about his hips when we found out he had dysplasia and he needed surgery.  Then I told her about his Epilepsy and the seizures he was having.  His mother died of Cancer, but the father is still alive.  Since this information she has continued to breed with the Father and she even bred the Father to Ben's full-blood Sister.  I don't know much about breeding, but what I do know is that I would hate to have the genes that Ben has to be repeated.  I would hate for another dog to go through what Ben has had to go through.  Do you know is it right for this breeder to continue to use the Father to breed and is it ok to breed Father to Daughter.  It doesn't seem right to me.  She claims that no other puppies have had troubles and I sincerely hope they haven't, but don't you think that just because they haven't yet doesn't necessarily mean they won't in the future.  I recently got ahold of the breeder to tell her that we have had to put Ben down, and I hope that she will discontinue breeding with Ben's father and any other sibling that has the same blood.  What do you all think.  Thank you

Father to Daughter is IN Breeding and usually not a good thing when you are breeding animals (or any other living thing for that matter). Line breeding is ok (half brother to half sister) but you shouldn't breed father to daughter, mother to son or full brother to full sister.

I don't breed dogs and it might be different with them but as far as I know with horses you shouldn't in breed.

*edited because I work graveyard so at 8:15 am my brain doesn't work.

I am so sorry you had to go through such hard times with your newf. :'( How sad to lose a family member on Christmas Eve.  :'(

My best advice would be don't go back to that breeder for your next dog. Find someone you can really talk to and someone whose breeding practices you really agree with.

Maybe there is a newf club who would have some information about proper pairing... but I'm thinking that if that person is making money breeding those dogs, they probably won't care if it's an ethical practice or not. :(

I can only imagine the pain you must be in.  Having a dog with epilepsy and HD (just had surgery 6 weeks ago) I know I will be devastated when Tucker crosses the bridge.  Something about these special needs pups that really grabs our hearts.  I am so sorry for your loss.

As for the breeder, sad to say but I'm sure she will continue these breeding practices and nothing you say will change that.

This is just me but I have decided that I will NEVER get a dog from a breeder.  There are just too many special dogs in rescue/shelters that need loving homes.
