What breeds has your dog been called?
Phelan is a Bullmastiff, we've gotten:
Rottweiler?
Pitbull
Chocolate Lab (um?)
Do you know what he is? (Yes, I do!!)
Staff
Dogue de Bordeaux...or really...is he Hooch?
Boxer
Mastiff from the Canary Islands (Because he looked like the dog in her puppy class, hmmm, that one made me laugh, but who am I to tell her she's got a Presa in her class, apparently ignorance IS bliss)
And the next person who tell me he looks like a Tiger is going to get a whopper of a story. Tiger? He's Red brindle sure, but Tiger?
-
My smooth Vizslas have been called..
Pitbull
Greyhound
Coonhounds
Ridgebacks
Red Weims (??Whats a Red Weim??)
GSP
Dobermans
So far Breeze has been called...
A Lab mix
My favorite Breeze breed guess came from a Petsmart groomer who was sure she was a "Vizsla-Doodle" and that "I had been taken by the breeder" since there was "no breed called a Wire-haired Vizsla" she was positive because she owned a book of rare breeds and they were not in there. ::)
-
The police have come to my house before to discuss how skinny my PIT BULL was. ::)
That is a HUGE Black Lab!
And of course, That's not a dog! That's a horse! Oh, if only I had a nickel for everytime someone spouted that. And they always think it's the first time I have ever heard it!
I also love all the food questions. I have been asked how many POUNDS of food he eats a day.
-
with the danes, we had zeus and memphis, both called:
pitbulls, Dobermans, Boxers, mastiffs, and horses. also we did get that Whos walking who? Wheres the saddle? How much does it eat? alot.
with ZERO; Pit bull & rottwiler were the only ones. Pitbull is most common with him, only been called a rotti once, as a pup ::)
Jigsaw- DON CHERRY DOG or SPUDZ MacKenzy lol nobody mistakes her breed :)
-
axle has been:
a husky
a malamute
a GERMAN SHEPHERD (come on!!)
a great dane / german shepherd
a great dane / husky
or some other sort of "mutt" and a few others i can't remember.
diesel has been a:
lab
greyhound
peanut has been a wiener dog
sheeba has been a:
husky
malamute
caine has simply been a pit bull or an "unidentifiable breed" (what breed is he??)
-
Tenchi (white/light harl great dane) has been called;
pit bull,
dalmation,
greyhound,
irish wolfhound,
english mastiff,
doberman?,
holstein calf,
goat.. (on more than one occasion??? wth people?)
Mojo (red tri aussie);
St Bernard,
rottie,
border collie,
a "lassie dog" ... ALL the time!
Kida (homozygous red merle mini aussie);
chihuahua,
papillon,
pomeranian,
sheltie,
and a cat... lol
-
Oh Lordy, lol
Sweetpea and Merlin have been called:
longhaired chihuahua
pomerainian
but most of the time all we get is a
"oh my how cute? what ARE they?"
"they could fly away with those ears"
"where's your magic feather dumbo??" (I could have killed that woman)
Atlas hasn't dealt with this yet, but some people question me when i say hes a German Shepherd, they go "arent they supposed to be black and tan?" GRRRRRRRR >:(
-
Shaste (RIP) Rotti

-
Tai (Akita)
is he a malamute?
Is he a german shephard???
What cross is that?
but all the time, and I mean all the time
we get your husky is a bit chunky isn't he?
-

sounds like we get the same comments! i hate the husky comment, esp when they ask how much axle weighs and i say about 140lbs and they say the chunky comment. uh, maybe he's a little chunky, but not a much!
-

ooh i just read your reply. yep the husky comment bothers me too.
And your Axle doesnt look chunky (from his piccies), the thing with akita's is they have a lot of skin, but when you feel underneath it its usually rock solid.
How dare they say our boys are overweight, especially when you don't even know what a husky (let alone akita) should look like!
-
lol unfortunately, in his age axle is getting more and flabby and less muscular ha ha. he does kind of giggle when he plops around! he's got a gigantic chest and a saggy belly and then a teeny tiny butt ha ha. seriously though, it is annoying. anyone who knows huskys or malamutes would know akitas are definately not one!
-
We've had:
what mix is he?
is that a full german shepherd?
he's got part husky in him, huh?
But no matter what they say, they always, and I mean ALWAYS start off with
OMG! Look at the size of those paws (feet/mitts)! He's gonna be HUGE!!!!
No!? Really?? I thought we bought a chihuahua! Well that explains why he's only 16 weeks and 45lbs! Thank you. I never would have guessed all by myself. Thank you.
-
With Morpheus a Neo/Dane we get
Catahoula all the time
Dalmation....t hey are white WTH
Most people just ask "what is he?". We usually tell them that he is a Great Dane X Chihuahua Cross. And dad was the Chihuahua. You would not belive the people that belived us.
We also get the how do you afford to feed a dog that big. And when I tell them that he only eats 6 cups of kibble a day I get the poor dog you are starving him to death look. And of course the Who is walking who line or the saddle comments, yeah havent heard that one before. All of my freinds have started calling him "The Shetland Pony with Sharp Teeth." He doesnt seem to mind so I guess I dont either.
AJ our Keeshound is the one that we get all of the crazy guesses on.
He has been called..
Akita and a
Malamute ... Umm hello he is 35 Lbs. WTF
Newfoundland .... he is gray and black
Huskey
Norwegian Elkhound
Spitz
A Baby Chow
Or any other fuzzy breed you can think of
Most people just ask what is he so I tell them a keeshound and they are always like "WOW I have never head of them, what are they." To which I love to reply.... HIM ;D :P ;D

THEY SAY THE SAME THING ABOUT ATLAS! lol we call him our little wolfman or bear cub, his paws are like dinner plates, but they say it like we're blind and dont know this. :)
-
HAHAHAHAH Morph is over a year old and we STILL get the feet comments. I know all too well what you mean. LMAO ::)
-
I know, it's like we're idiots and didn't realize what kind of breed we have. My husband and I just start LOL when someone says it now. Of course, the person looks at us like we're aliens or on drugs cuz we're laughing so loud.
-
Gunther (great dane)
the most commen comment is horse, followed by:
greyhound
mastiff
he hasn't been called pitbull since he was a puppy
tiger
I just love it when they say: you must have a big yard/house. I just love telling them that nope, right now I'm actually homeless...... ...lol (which is technically true)
Keiko (husky and probably shep mix)
they usually get the husky part right b/c of her odd eyes.........a lthough I get asked all the time if she's blind in that eye (whaaaaa?)
wolf
coyote.......y es, I have a pet coyote that I bring into town with me that has odd eyes and loves people
Nigel and Posey (rat terriers)
most commen by like 95% is min pin.......hmmm m, last time I checked, min pins only came in black and tan (both n&p are tricolors)
today someone asked manchester terrier (nigel)
chihuahua (posey)
jack russel terrier
basenji
And of course the big yard/house comment comes up again when people see me with 4 dogs and find out they're mine. They will ask, "are they all yours?" No, I found them all wandering around and decided to start a collection. And the "who's walking who" comment is really old, along with any reference to a horse or saddle.
-
Lucian has been called:
a pug
a bug or buggle or puggle
a sharpei (way too many times)
a lab
a pit bull
a dogo
a cane corso
and a boxer
Reef has been called:
A boxer
A black lab
A greyhound mix
And please don't get me started on the feet thing. I know exactly what you are all talking about!
-

i actually got into an argument with a guy b/c he said axle was a german shepherd / great dane mix. he swore upside down that i was mistaken, until i lied (yes, i lied, i don't have papers but if i wanted to pay all of the fees for the AKC since his parents' owners lost the mom's papers i could have them) and said slightly too loud, "would you like me to go home and get his registration papers?!" he was on my nerves so bad, how can you tell someone what kind of dog they own ???
-
coyote.......yes, I have a pet coyote that I bring into town with me that has odd eyes and loves people
This cracked me up.
I took the dogs to Eeyore's Birthday, a festival/celebration in Austin yesterday-lots of hippies drinking beer and banging drums all day. It's great. Anyway, I mostly got Saint Bernard for Riley (or "Beethoven!"), but I got two Newfoundland comments and quite a few "What is IT?"
People usually correctly identify Sadie as a lab, though I've gotten the pit mix question. She looks like a lab straight out of a calendar or book.
And of course, the horse, saddle, food, yard/house size, and who's walking who comments come frequently, as do the stares in awe when I say they live inside (especially in my area of town where that just doesn't happen).
-
I can't believe I missed this thread,
I've got to go back and read all the funnies.
Magic has gotten all kinds of guesses.????
He is a Bouvier AKC but he is fawn or blonde, and I have him in a schanuzer type hair cut.
a terrier of some kind
a gaint scotti
airdale
schanuzer
I know there are more I just can't think of them
Rarely someone will recognize he is a Bouvier, but we take it all in good humor.
Tricia and the fur kids
-
Siberian Huskies-
Wolves, constantly.
Mutts (People down here apparently aren't used to well bred siberian huskies, and when they see my, say, 35 LB red bitch with brown eyes, she couldn't POSSIBLY be a "real husky" as she's too small and doesnt have blue eyes... the last person that did this to me argued with me for 20 minutes saying she KNEW HUSKIES since she was an AKC BREEDER and none of hers were EVER under 90LBS...sorry, you had MALAMUTES. I finally told her I would write all the judges that put her up and tell them how I fooled them with a mixed breed, and would then renounce her championship ::) )
Malamutes, which is SO suprising.
GSDs ??? ???
Best one was I was out walking three and someone stopped me and said "Are those dogs REAL??" It took me a moment to answer and then I answered with "No, I just like to take my stuffed animals for a brisk consitutional every morning"
Afghan hounds:
Greyhounds
Whipets
salukis ??? I would think Saluki is a LESS known breed then afghan hound
Mutt
"What is that dog?"
Chinese Cresteds:
Hairless rat (lovely)
Hairless CAT
Mexican Hairless
Xolo
Terrier
Mutt
Puffs get called Yorkies, Poms, mutts, Pekes etc
"What happened to its HAIR?!"
"What is that?"
Whiskey (Tail less golden)
Australian Shepherd <~Constantly
Golden Mix
"White Lab"
Cocker mix ???
"Why did you cut off his TAIL?!" Umm.. I didn't, its a birth defect, he was born that way.
"Hey, he doesnt have a tail!" What, really?! HOLY CRAP! How did I miss that?
-
Reef has been called:
A boxer
A black lab
A greyhound mix
This mix-up is my favorite so far, everyone who is terrified of Pitts and they can't even identify one! I guess they only come in Brindle and every brindle is a pitt. (Can we see some more pics of Reef and Lucien ;D )
-
Yup, I've definitely been taken because ALL St. Bernards are long haired! Didn't you know that? He can't possibly be a short haired Saint!! Maybe a Saint cross, but he's definitely not a full saint.
I love how much people think they know!
-
I get the same thing. There is no such thing as a short-haired Saint. Or why did you shave him? I've been asked if Bubba was a Saint/Dane mix when he was going through the leggy stage. With Lola I get 'told' alot that there is no such thing as a half-mask Saint so she must be a mix. LOL
-
Siberian Huskies-
Wolves, constantly.
We used to have a red/white husky and we heard that wolf thing all the time! She had one blue one brown eye and we actually had someone threaten to call the cops on us because "it's illegal to have a pet wolf on your property"! hahahahaha
Most people know what Koby is but we'v had a few silly guesses on his breed:
Doberman
Rottie
Greyhound
With his coloring I thought for sure we'd get the "oh that's a weim" but no ones ever said that. I absolutely hate it when someone asks "What the heck is that THING?" ::)
-
Hmm, well I don't get that much. I get the feet thing of course, I get the saddle thing- 'boy when they grow up..' I don't mind it though, people have been nice and are always in love with them. I don't get breed guesses that I can remember. People ALWAYS ask what they are. It's a 50/50 shot if they know the breed once I tell them, but you just don't see them around, I've never seen one actually. They just ask and then either ask how big they will get or say, wow..they're gonna be huge huh. I'll say, just a little. ;)
I really want to get them a play date with my mil's 2 maltese but I think she thinks (as most people would) that they would have them for snack. They love little dogs though!
-
I love this thread! When I walk with Bo EVERYONE has to stop and weigh in on her size & what kind of breed she is. I have heard the following so many times I hear them in my sleep:
"Is she a white/albino Newf?"
"I've never seen an all white St. Bernard before"
"are you sure she's a pure breed...aren't they usually all black?"
"is that a white golden retriever?" (huh?)
"what do you FEED her?" (ill-behaved children. and kibble)
"How big are her poops?" (why would someone need to know the answer to that?)
"Does she weigh more than you do?" (that one makes me cringe)
"Where's her saddle?"
"Is that a polar bear?" (yeah, the zoo loaned her to me to make my walks more interesting...)
"DAMN!"
and my personal favorite
"Holy shit that's a huge dog!" (that's my girl!)
-

lol, loved those.
-
You should come to Guelph (A little far, i know) it is home to the big paw!! I saw someone walking 2 GPs yesterday and that was before we got to the park--a woman with 3 Saints, her car actually bottomed out over the bumpy road....3 Saints, her and her husband in a GrandPrix :o
I thought i heard a lot of ignorant comments, good to see i'm not alone ::) Ann
-
I get min pins all the time with my black chihuahuas. Min Pins do come in solids (as well as black and tan)like red or chocolate (they come in doberman colours..so blue as well), so they are close lol.
Oops, my bad. Its been so long since i've seen a non black and tan min pin that I forgot for a bit that they do come in other colors. Duh, I should know that a friend has a blue marked. But still shouldn't have white on them (my ratties have ALOT of white). ;)
-
Not white, they can be solid blue, or have blue with tan markings like a doberman.
-
i actually got into an argument with a guy b/c he said axle was a german shepherd / great dane mix. he swore upside down that i was mistaken, until i lied (yes, i lied, i don't have papers but if i wanted to pay all of the fees for the AKC since his parents' owners lost the mom's papers i could have them) and said slightly too loud, "would you like me to go home and get his registration papers?!" he was on my nerves so bad, how can you tell someone what kind of dog they own ???
I know exactly what you mean. Yes, I've fibbed too when they start going on about Bear being shepherd/husky.. oh and the other day shepherd/dane. Granted I'm not 100% sure he IS pure shepherd, but I've had enough shep mixes to know what he ain't! Although, a shep/dane mix would be awesome. Hehe.
-
I know a lot of you have already heard this story: the hubby was walking Jack. A guy driving by stops and yells "What kind of dog is that" Hubby was really sick of this question by then. He yelled back "Chihuahua"
LOL!! I've used "chihuahua on steroids" before. People just have no sense of humour. LOL
-
and my personal favorite
"Holy shit that's a huge dog!" (that's my girl!)
HAHAHAHA too funny. I just got back from the vet's and heard this for the first time today:
IJIT: "How old is he? 7 months?"
Me: No he's only 16 weeks.
IJIT: "OH MY GAWD! He's gonna be one BIG dog!"
-
Well I didn't know how to link it so here it is, feel free to add, and be prepared to answer any and all questions for your future BP aka Bullmastiff ;)
-
Phelan loves to do the froggy splay leg laydown in the water, so recently when we were in the park some woman commented on it and my Brandon replied "Yep, he's a Bull-frog" to which she replied "oh, okay"....um no lady he really isn't part frog ::) You should have seen the look we gave eachother ;D
-
Hahaha, bullfrog... Chloe has been called...
a lab
a boxer
and.... "um what is that?"
And because of her HOD, she walks funny, a lot of people ask whats wrong with her, and i dont mind telling them, and educating them on what the disease is... but one guy... he was insistant that she got hit by a car >:( JERK. even after i explained that she DID NOT because i take care of her and she never leaves my sight (that an theres no way she could gimp out to the road... its too far away, and she would never make it lol) he still insisted she was hit by a car. WHATEVER... moron... ::)
-
LOL good ones. We've gotten black Great Pyr...Mastiff, Great Dane, Black St. Bernard
Wow, when I take Naja out I get the Albino Newf, it's funny that random ppl even know what a Pyr is, when I tell ppl Great Pyrenees, they're like "Wha?? What's a Great Perenealise?" (They never say the name right. ::)
I've also been asked if she is a blond Golden Retreiver, or a White Lab (Are there even white labs?? I've never seen one.) Of course the horse comment, and the Polar Bear comments. Where's her saddle? Can I ride her? You must like to vacuume alot! Look at those paws!!! How are you going to find her in the winter? Hope you've got a big house!
But of course there are the ppl that are genuinly interested, and those I don't mind taking a few minutes to explain her breed and personality and such. And I always love when kids come up to her and ask to pet her, and then just end up giving her a BIG hug 'cause she's so soft and cuddly! :D
-
Oh yeah, the big house thing!! I love that one...I say Why yes I do have a big house! a$$holes :) LOL
[/quote]
HA HA, gotta love dumb people! But you have to love SMRT (homer is SMRT, smart) people better.
Like the guy in the park who first asked what Phelan was-Bullmastiff
Then commented- ??? Oh he's small- yep they aren't full grown until 18mos-24mos and he's 14mos
Then had to add that his friends FEMALE is bigger than Phelan, she's 140lbs (why do people focus on weight of big dogs?) - then I add, "hmm, really because 120lbs is top of the standard for females" *cough* dumb!@$k
Perhaps your "friend's" dog is overweight or you're not as SMRT as you think you are.
-
I hate it when people comment on Tani at the dog park. Tani is such a mixed bag, people always feel that it's necessary to "help me" figure it out, like I asked. People confidently announce to me that she's part pitt or part greyhound or part husky or whatever, like they are experts. She's my dog, and I don't even know. Although, based on the eyes and the merle socks that don't show in the avatar, I'd say that aussie is a good guess for some part of her. I don't know why people can't just keep their comments complimentary like, "oooh, what a pretty dog" or something like that. You'd never walk up to a person and go "So what are you, like part African American, maybe a little Indian? Some Dutch in there somewhere? Your eyes look Irish. My mom was Irish, but you look like you're about 50 pounds heavier than she was."
-
LMAO Well done
-
And that's why we enjoy Holly LMAO
-
That freaking "He's a horse" comment makes me want to punch someone these days. Or, "He's bigger than you!" Um, yeah, I kinda noticed that already. Most things are, considering I am not even 5'2". Thank you Captain Obvious. ::)
As far as breed guesses:
Saint Bernard
Rottweiler
What mix is he? (Um..none, he's a pure bred)
Mastiff
Berenese Mountain Dog (totally acceptable, considering he is just the slightly bigger, short-haired brethren)
I guess I can't get too cranky though. I like it when people are interested and want to love on him, instead of freak out and hide their children. ::)
