: run or not to run?
: lokibud August 04, 2007, 12:45:46 AM
the time has come once again to whip my fat but back in shape. here lies the problem. I HATE RUNNING unless i have somone to run with. wife said no, loki is my next option. my old lab would run circles around me back in the day but i herd that its not healthy to run large breed dogs till there full grown. the roumor is that it causes problem with there joints, HD, arthritous, ect. loki loves to run and i think it would be great for the both of us. we both getting fat ;D. can anyone squash this roumor or is it true. the vet told me last week loki has another 50 plus pounds to grow! also my lab hated running on pavement. i think it hurt her pads but loki dosent seem to care. would it hurt him to run on pavement?

Word of caution when thinking about jogging with your large breed.  there are certain breeds not built for jogging.  Rotts are one of those breeds.  i would discourage running long distances with your Rott.  Consult your vey.
when Lady was having surgory for her first ACL, the vet told us that part of her lifelong plan should not include jogging.  And i quote "Rotts were not bult for running"  he went on to say that it makes him mad to see someone jogging with a breed like a Rott.
Maybe it's just one opinion, but with the predisposition for Rotts to tear ligaments and ACL's (a highly expensive fix) just because of the way they stand/lunge unlike most breeds, i would be leary of having Loki be your jogging partner.  call the hound down the street to jog with. :)

I agree  with Lin and Stella,  Rottis  are  for not a jogging  breeed.  Walking yes  I take  zeus  for walks  lots of course many  rest stops but  he loves it  of course  i will let him of leash and he will do  Circles around me.
