: The Big Snip is fast approaching- Update
: Pyr Heaven January 02, 2008, 02:05:15 PM
Yes. Miles goes in for his neuter on Monday at 8:15am. I am so nervous.

The Dr. apparently called me with the results of the pre op bloodwork, but I didn't have a message on my phone. Maybe he called the wrong number or something. hahaha So I called today, and I talked to the receptionist. She got the file and said he called and said they didn't find anything significant, which means he checks out good, and he can go through the surgery. But after I got to thinking I was like, nothing SIGNIFICANT, but does that mean they DID find something that was a bit off!?

Also, Miles' bottom left canine baby tooth hasn't fallen out yet, but his adult tooth is almost all grown in! So, I let them know they need to get that removed too, but she couldn't get me a quote over the phone since they weren't aware of this and they will need to take a look first. Ugh.

I'm such a worry wart. I know that TONS of animals get this done, but for some reason I'm so nervous! I think those 3 days at the animal emergency center when he was 9 weeks old scarred me for life. Seriously.

Don't worry! He will be just fine  :)
I hope that the surgery will go REALLY well and Mr. Miles recover easily and fast (((hugs)))

P.S. I would be spooked to life as well if I had to go through what you went  :P

I'm sure he'll be just fine, but I'd be nervous as well, of course! But, I do have a question: I know Miles is about Sammy's age (Sammy is six months tomorrow), and though they're different breeds, I was told by my vet that I shouldn't get Sammy fixed until he's about a year, at least?? That seemed late to me when he told me that, but maybe they do things differently here in France than what I'm used to in the States. Does is really matter what age you get a male dog fixed at? My vet's explanation had to do with him being a large breed, needing more time to grow, etc etc., but I know Miles is just about the same size as Sam (70 lbs). So, should I be thinking about getting him fixed sooner than at a year old?

Thanks!

I have heard many different opinions on this from different vets.  I am a proponent on the wait til a year old but that and .78$ will get you a crappy cup of gas station coffee.  I know many people who believe in getting it done earlier.  At the end of the day make sure you are comfortable with the decision you make. In reality, I have not heard a story about bad things happening from either doing it @ 6 months or waiting to a year; so logic dictates either wasy your pooch will be just fine.

Oh, I am sure he will be just fine.  SadieA, our vet won't neuter any animal until he feels it is sexually mature.  In large breed dogs, he recommends waiting until at least 12 if not 18 months or older.  I have been told that this is due to the growth plates not closing as early as they normally would due to the lack of hormones.  I don't know if that is true, just what I have heard and read.  Luckily, I don't plan to neuter Max, so I don't have to worry about it either way.  Cody and Jake came through rescue, so it wasn't my decision with them.  I will just have to deal with whatever happens there.  Good luck.

Hello All. Thanks for all your support! I decided to get Miles neutered earlier than later for a few different reasons.

One, he's starting to hump everything, including me. I do know that humping is not something that will disappear with neutering...bu t I do think it will reduce it. I also wanted to do it before he starts marking. Once again, not that he never will, but it should minimize the chance of him ever starting. The second reason I decided to do it at 6-7 months was because all the animals I've ever had, large and small, have been neutered around this age they have all been fine. Also, all the shelters in this area will not adopt out a dog before it's neutered whether it be 8 weeks or 8 years. I don't think they would do something that is bad for the animals! Thirdly, I think it's harder for older dogs to recover from surgery.

P.S. I can't imagine the cost of a neuter for an adult dog. For Miles at 75 pounds it's 270.

I just dropped off Miles at the vet. He was so nervous. He wouldn't even get on the scale, and that's usually never a problem!!! Also, when we finally did get him on the scale it showed he lost a pound and a half since last time. :-\ I hope it's just because he wasn't on long and he was jumping all over the place. But he hasn't been eating much lately either. ???

When the doctor came in the exam room, he was so scared! He was wagging his tail, and he wanted to see her, but then he started barking at her and hid behind the exam table.

I finally had to grab him and hold him so she could look at his teeth and see the one that needs removed. He was whipping his head around like a maniac then he finally hid it in my shirt.

When I left he was choking himself trying to come with me  :-\

I can't wait til I can pick him up this afternoon. I hope everything goes alright. I miss him! haha

P.S. They told me it was about 270 for the neuter originally, yeah....pretty sure it's more like 370 with pain meds, an e-collar, and whatever else they're charging me for. haha

Miles is home! ;D I feel so bad for him though. That stupid e-collar thing is such a pain in the butt-for him AND me. hahaha.

The first thing he did when we got home was stand by where his food is. They said to wait and see if he could hold down water so I gave him a bit....and so far so good. So, I gave him a small amount of food. The poor guy hasnt eaten for 24 hours! hahaha He also got a little yogurt spoon fed to him. Spoiled much!? ::)

Now, he's just walking around running into everything. He's so tired, but he's trying not to fall asleep. As soon as I pet his head his eyes start drooping. hahaha

Awwww, those pics do say it all, don't they??  Poor baby, he's not too happy with the days events.  Cara, my first Pyr, would take her E-collar and go stick it against the wall with her head stuck inside it.  It was so comical, but she hated it if we laughed, so we tried not to (ha!  :D) but it was really hard!

I've found over the years that my Pyrs really have a hard time getting the anesthetic out of their systems and they stay groggy & wobbly for longer than the vet expects.  So a few years ago I started giving them their first few post-op meals mixed with a cup or two of water to help their kidneys flush the meds out faster by pushing fluids.  It really seems to work and mine love it.  I usually just mix their kibble with some water and a bit of canned food (to make it more like soup) and it's a big hit.  I hope Miles feels better quickly.  He has a special place in my heart (from afar) b/c I remember how sick he was when you first joined BPO and it's wonderful to see how great he's done since.  Please give the big boy a hug & kiss from me.   :-*

Poor ol' Miles. :( :(  He looks pitiful in those pictures.  He still looks a bit groggy from the anesthesia.  It took Zeus at least 24 hours after surgery to get his balance back, and his appetite soon followed!  Is the collar just a precaution, or has he been licking his sutures already?  Just asking, because maybe you could take it off if its bothering him and bruising you and just supervise him for a while.  My two didn't even seem to notice that anything happened "down there."  No licking or anything.  So thankfully we didn't have to use the collars.  It made life much easier.  Good luck, and kisses to that beautiful boy! :-* :-*

This morning he is a little bit better. Tryin to be his crazy self. Still whining on the occasion...and won't eat unless I hand feed him...the little brat. But the fact that he lost a pound before surgery really worried me, so if I have to hand feed him for a couple days to get him to eat, at least he's eating. Since he got a tooth removed too, his mouth may be sore...but he wont eat his food softened ???

I did finally take off the ol' e-collar. He would just lay on the floor and constantly whine. I think he was depressed because he couldn't get comfy with that stupid thing. So, currently he's not wearing it, but at night time...and when we are away, I think he'll have to wear it. As soon as I took it off, he went in for a lick! But, I've been keeping a good eye on him and everytime I see him go for it, I tell him, "No" and he stops. Which is interesting because he's never listened to that command before! hahahaha It's been off for about 45 minutes, and he's tried to lick it maybe 3 times. We'll see how it goes without the collar. Maybe if I threaten to put it back on when he licks he'll stop altogether! hahaha

Modified to add: The e-collar is sort of a precautionary measure and the vet actually told me to leave it on him until he gets his sutures removed. All 13 days. They wrote that on the care sheet specifically for Miles. Since he's so big, and they don't think I'll be able to get it back on him once I get it off. hahaha

poor guy, I do hope he feels better soon! That collar sounds like no fun... I'm sure I'd give in and take it off just like you did! It's hard to see such a sweet little boy looking so sad and pathetic!
