: why own a dog...?
: schelmischekitty April 05, 2008, 12:33:18 AM
Why own a dog? There's a danger you know,
You can't own just one, for the craving will grow.
There's no doubt they're addictive, wherein lies the danger.
While living with lots, you'll grow poorer and stranger.

One dog is no trouble, and two are so funny.
The third one is easy, the fourth one's a honey.
The fifth one's delightful, the sixth one's a breeze,
You find you can live with a houseful of ease.

So how 'bout another? Would you really dare?
They're really quite easy but, oh, Lord the hair!
With dogs on the sofa and dogs on the bed,
And crates in the kitchen, it's no bother, you've said.

They're really no trouble, their manners are great.
What's one more dog and just one more crate?
The sofa is hairy, the windows are crusty,
The floor is all footprints, the furniture dusty.

The housekeeping suffers, but what do you care?
Who minds a few noseprints and a little more hair?
So let's keep a puppy, you can always find room,
And a little more time for the dust cloth and broom.

There's hardly a limit to the dogs you can add,
The thought of a cutback sure makes you sad.
Each one is so special, so useful, so funny.
The vet and food bills grows larger, you owe BIG money.

Your folks never visit, few friends come to stay,
Except other "dog folks" who live the same way.
Your lawn has now died, and your shrubs are dead too,
But your weekends are busy, you're off with your crew.

There's dog food and vitamins, training and shots.
And entries and travel and motels which cost lots.
Is it worth it you wonder? Are you caught in a trap?
Then that favorite one comes and climbs in your lap.

His look says you're special and you know that you will
Keep all of the critters in spite of the bill.
Some just for showing and some just to breed.
And some just for loving, they all fill a need.

God, winter's a hassle, the dogs hate it too.
But they must have their walks though they're numb and your blue.
Late evening is awful, you scream and you shout
At the dogs on the sofa who refuse to go out.

The dogs and the dog shows, the travel, the thrills,
The work and the worry, the pressure, the bills.
The whole thing seems worth it, the dogs are your life.
They're charming and funny and offset the strife.

Your life-style has changed. Things won't be the same.
Yes, those dogs are addictive and so is the dog game.

Thanks for posting this--very cute! Luckily (or unlucky, depending on your point of view), my husband keeps my animal numbers under some semblance of control over here--he's maxxed out, so I can't take another, but they are so addicting... ;D

That is just so perfect!  Thank you for the smile.  ;D

It's funny because just a tad over a year ago we had just one dog (my Miss Daisy) and she had no interest in the sofa.  Back then though life was too quiet & our family was missing someone (one? ha,ha!), so we went looking for that pyrfect someone and ended up with two.  Then Cassie showed Daisy the wonders of sofa sleeping.  So now all of our furniture is slipcovered & it's not unusual for we humans to have to find spots to fit ourselves on the sofas amongst the pups.  LOL  Honestly, I can't imagine life any other way.  Well, except maybe...for one more someday.   ;)  ;D

I giggled with my husband so much after reading that!  The houskeeping really struck home with me, as I used to be immaculate and now... I've learned radical acceptance and then some.

We've managed to keep it down to three, with me, being the one who wants another (but won't!  I'm strong!), and my husband who doesn't, but always tries to bring home another.

When time permits, to balance our urges, I want to start fostering.

I really like this poem as well.  I also read it to my husband, and we giggled like schoolchildren .  On our last 7 hour road trip back to our hometowns, I joked that he has such a big backseat that we could surely fit at least 2 more.  He suggested that we start collected Chihuahuas or Yorkies - we'd be able to squeeze in 8 more!

Yes, as sappy as I get about dogs, he is worse than I am.  In fact, this year when he was sent to purchase the license tags he waited in line and almost took home a turn-in.  His excuse?  It was small, cute, and wouldn't take much to feed.  While my heart cries yes, unfortunately, my wallet and time cry no.  Heh.

Our Raja was rescued from a sad situation.  Her owner purchased her while married with two small children.  Marriage broke up and he (owner) was single again and never home.  She was crated up from 3 months of age until we adopted her at 9 months, with the exception of a couple of hours a day.  I'd always dreamed of having a Saint Bernard again (my parent's fostered a few when I was a kid), and offered to "kennel her" while he searched for a new home.  When I introduced the idea to Shannon (my husband) I was shocked when he agreed.

Raja wasn't even at hour house 30 minutes when he sadly said, "There is just no way, Heather, no way."  (He'd never been around big dogs before, the biggest was our Lab Bo).  Within two days he said, "We're keeping her!"  This fit into my plans all along, if things went smoothly (which they did).

This is much better than my, "I think we were still legally drunk when we got Bo story."  That is for another day, months of planning thrown down the drain.  And a lesson learned about breeders, but I love him (Bo and the husband) anyways.
