: Hi from Ohio - Gr8 Pyr
: DaPeach June 17, 2008, 01:07:18 PM
Hello everyone!

We are owned by two proud Pyr rescues, Katie 6-or so & Franklin 2 1/2-or so.  Katie came to us in 2002 as a companion to our late Pyr Harvey (shown in my avatar).  Frankie was a 2007 adoption for Kate, who had grown depressed & lethargic...sh e has now lost 20 pounds in over a year & they couldn't be happier.  We have two cats (male & female) that were strays about the neighborhood that decided to adopt us too.

We are avid supporters of the Heart of Ohio Great Pyrenees Rescue & new members of the GPCA.

I'm looking forward to hanging around & checking this site out...it looks pretty active. 8)

Hi Karri! Welcome to you and your lovely "Crew", Frankie & Katie! I'm Jane - Mom to Rainbow & Whisper.

Your pictures are great! Also love the one of the Specialty. I didn't make it this year but several others did. NEXT YEAR FOR SURE! ;)

I'm another GPCA member as well as NorthStar Gr Pyr Rescue. (Did you see Marnie there?)

Thanks everyone!

I'd love to go out to Santa Barbara next year...unless I hit the lotto, I doubt it's going to happen :( :D.

I met alot of people, but I'm terrible with names...I hope to get to know more people in the future.  I'm just starting to really get involved w/ things.  I did a little design for a t-shirt to benefit the rescue, but I'm not sure if I can advertise it on here.

I just bought Franklin a harness from Wilczek's & I'm building him a wagon...give him a little something to do & my niece & nephew will love it.

Hi Karri!  I'm Marie, mom to 3 active boys (2 legged, no fur  ;)) and three busy pups, Daisy, Sammy & Cassie.  My hubby "bought" Daisy from some kids selling puppies in front of a grocery store as a 8 week old pup.  Though it was more like a rescue since he couldn't resist b/c she looked so sick, and she was poor baby!  Cassie came to us in Feb '06 from an elderly couple that couldn't care for her any longer & Sammy came to us from Pyr Rescue.  My sweet Cara & Halley came to us from GPCA breeders.  Though they are both at the bridge now, they are never forgotten.  Until Cass & Sam we always had one Pyr at a time, but no more.  The potato chip analogy is very true here!   ;)  :D

Santa Barbara, huh?  Well, though it's a long way from here, at least it's on the same coast, so that might be possible for us.  I've always wanted to go to a Nat'l Spec., so I'll see what I can do!!!  I'd be in pyr heaven!

Welcome! I am a buckeye too! I just found this site myself about a month ago. I adopted my komondor/lab mix from a shelter in Urbana. I haven't found any kom owners here yet. But the Pyr people have been great with advice on food, grooming, etc. Any great advice you have on LGD would be appreciated.

I live in Waynesville about 30 miles north of Cincy. Where are you in Ohio?

My big baby is 6 months old (as of Monday)and weighs in at about 85 or so. She is going to be a big girl!

Again, welcome.

Komondors are beautiful, I can imagine what a great dog she'll be mixed w/ lab.  Stick around here, I'm sure we'd all like to see her grow up!

I'm in the Youngstown/Warren area, northeast.

As far as LGD, do you mean an actual working LGD or just the type of dog & what you can expect as an owner from them?

Thanks for the welcome!

Hi there... Welcome from another Ohio big dog owner.  I'm Lora and have two saints and 4 labs.  We are near Columbus.

She is not a working LGD. She definately has all the personality of a lab. Her coat has been a mystery to me. She never shedded even during her bath, then about a month ago she started to shed her puppy coat or what I call her bear fur and her new coat is coming in curly and "white". She was pure black when I got her with four white toes. See the pic below. Anyway she seems to have stopped shedding her puppy coat and is only half way finished. I don't know if I should help it along and have her groomed or not. My husband and I are kinda curious what it will do on its own.

Anyway, welcome again.

quite a family you've got there!  Are they all in the house?

Funny she's changing colors. I've known pyrs colors to fade, but not completely change.  A weekly brushing/combing does wonders for every dog. Being a large dog, weekly brushings will make quick work of the task instead of allowing it to build up & taking half a day to groom.  She's a single-coated dog isn't she?  If so, the brushing should be easy & help pull the fine puppy hair out...I'd suggest a groomer if she's becoming matted, but it's not neccessary.  Definitely comb her out before you bathe her.  Any fine hair underneath will tighten up like wool when it dries.

a shedding comb with varied pins works great to loosen & remove the shedding hair...I use a finer one on my parents basset hound, works great!

use a decent pin brush to finish & remove the loose hair on top...it finishes the pyrs nicely

Her coat is like "cotton" in texture, very soft and naturally seperates. You can see her color change from root to tip. It has a cool effect in the wind. She is a single coated dog, but the new coat coming in is curly and looks like an undercoat underneath her puppy fur. It is curly from her neck to her tail, but her head, sides, and legs are straight. Who knows how she will end up. I brush her vigoursly every day. Her breed is not supposed to shed, though I did read that they will shed their puppy coats. No matts so far, she hasn't started to cord or anything. From what I have read this does not start until they are 3 years old and she just turned 6 months.

I guess we will just wait and see. I am documenting it with lots of pics. People who haven't seen her in awhile can't believe it is the same pup. She has changed colors so much is is still growing about 5-8lbs per week. Is this growth normal for a Pyr? She is in the upper 80's now. She gets fixed on Friday and they will weigh her then so I will have a more accurate weight.

The pyr I had as a pup gained about 10# a month until he was mature.  She will definitely be bigger than most pyrs!

Her weight gain will slow in the next six months...just be aware of it & adjust her food accordingly, no biggie, she needs her nutrition.  We stop in at the vets office once every couple months just to keep an eye on things & use their scales.

Do you think her coat will cord being a lab mix?
: Re: Hi from Ohio - Gr8 Pyr
: TINKSMOM June 19, 2008, 08:08:23 AM
I think her coat will definately cord, but I will definately keep it cut to about 3"-4" max. After I brush her you can hardly tell, it immediately goes back to it's natural seperation. I asked the vet about it and he thinks so too.I read up on the grooming it takes to keep it corded and not matted and you have to manually seperate it every day, bath regularly and it takes about 24 hrs to dry. I already have a full time job. lol.

Besides, I think she would be more comfortable with a coat of a reasonable length.

I really think I have the best of both worlds. She is kom physically, but all Lab personality.

Thanks for the tips.
