: Old Mastiff with recurring problems
: COOLHANDATC January 31, 2006, 11:33:23 AM
My 13 yr old big boy has been having recurring problems with getting up and down. For a few days he will be almost immobile then he will come out of it in just a couple days. I'm concerned that his quality of life is dwindling. He has been with me through thick and thin and my heart breaks to even think about having him put down due to poor  quality of life. Does anyone have suggestions. I'm having to move out of the country soon and am concerned that he won't make the trip.

Have you thought about glucosamine and chondroitin products?  Here is a link that might give you some insight.  A friend of mine had a boxer that started to develop problems and glucosamine chondroitin cleared them up for him!  Just a thought!   :)  The best of luck to you

I've just started my Newfs on Cetyl M and MSM.  Cowboy has arthritis in his front elbows and was limping even on Cosequin. His breeder swears by Cetyl M and MSM and promises wonders.  He's not limping now so maybe it does work???

I got the Cetyl M from www.katiesbump ers.com.  Good luck!!

Adequan has been used with remarkable success in giant breeds....actu ally all breeds.  It was developed for race horses and then made the short trip over to small animal practise.  Check onit.  Especially if you can give your shots.  It's pricey but everything worth having sometimes is.

We have a similar problem with our 11 yr old, Josh.  With him it seems to be a back problem.  Former owner used to let Josh and Jesse jump out of the back of the truck so they both have arthritis in the elbows plus Josh has the back issue.  I keep Rimadyl on hand for those times when he can't get up.  It really helps him out.  If you can pinpoint the cause, the vet may have a better idea of what will help.  Dogs getting old stinks!  My 13 yr old gal has a tough time keeping her legs under her these days.    She's also got a tumor in her neck that we are watching...  Somedays I feel like they are all on borrowed time.

:)Thanks to all of you. I recently started Max on Rimadyl and Syna-Flex. He has shown a marked improvement in only two weeks of rimadyl. The syna-flex hasn't had time to get into him good yet. I'm greatful for all of your suggestions.

I would check into another painkiller other than Rimadyl.  A friend of mine lost her Kuvasz to it, and there are marked other cases of dogs having severe reactions.

Oh I'm so sorry.  I'm so so sorry.  This is sad, but he was one of the lucky ones.  He had you loving him up right until the end.  What a long wonderful life.
A few people here let go of balloons for their pooches when they pass.  You could maybe set loose 13 yellow/white (peace/love) helium balloons for him.
Could you post some pics of him during his life so we can all gush over him?
Take care,
Ronda
