My mother-in-law said she was going to send me one (after spending 4 days with my two smelly newfs!). She swears that they take the smell out of your dogs coat. I'm curious but cautious.

I just found your post after searching for anyone who had experience with pigeon toed walk. Can you tell me how things turned out for Dolly? My pup has developed a pigeon toed walk and I'm trying to figure out how to proceed..

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Question for two dog owners w/a male and female

We are about to add another pup to our home. We have a two year old nuetered male. We did have two males and they got along without any problems. We are thinking of adding a female this time. My only concern is that Cooper tries to hump certain female dogs at the dog park. I don't want to bring in a female if it will be a hump-fest all the time. Of course we would have her fixed as well..
So what I'm wondering is if that behavior will disappear after the novelty has worn off or he has demonstrated his dominance or whatever it's about.
Anyone have any experience with this?

Great Pyrenees Discussions / Recommendation for reputable Great Pyr breeder on West Coast?

Can anyone recommend a good breeder on the West Coast. We are in Oregon and I'd prefer to pick a puppy up rather than have it transported. I really want to find a breeder whose dogs are OFA certified and/or offers a health guarantee. We already experienced double hip surgery with our Newf and I don't want to go through that again.

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Dog smell in the house

I LOVE my pups and would never think about banning them from the house or particular rooms BUT my house smells strongly of dog no matter how clean it is. It's gotten to the point that I'm too embarrassed to invite people over.
My mother just told me about an air purifier she heard about that is suppose to remove the smell from the house. They are very expensive! But if they work, I'd consider it for peace of mind. Does anyone have any experience with these air purifiers and if so what kind? Any other ideas for getting the smell out?

I'd love to hear some good advice about this as well. Cooper is normally so docile and friendly but he guards the house and truck like this and I'm concerned about it. It's very scary for people. If he was only aggressive with sketchy looking people I'd be ok but it is indiscriminate including kids who may come close to the truck..

I'd love to hear more about them if anyone is knowledgeable. I'm specifically wondering if there is much difference (temperment or appearance) between a glodendoodle and a labradoodle. Maybe the hybrid is too new for any conclusions like that..

You make a great point about burrs and foxtails.. I hadn't even thought of that part. I probably will clip him. And yeah, we probably will be in S.Oregon or Northern CA.
And it would be great if Cooper would dry faster. He takes almost all day to dry now which means he gets that musty smell that laundry gets if you leave it in the washing machine too long. STINKY! I thought Newf's would dry faster than that (or at least not get as wet) since they are water dogs. But it could be because Cooper isn't full Newf..
What do the rest of you do about your dogs strong odor? I'm getting really tired of everyone telling me how bad he smells.

Thanks for all the good information. I did in fact mean "clipping" rather than shaving down to the skin. I've never taken him to a groomer so I don't know any reputable ones. I also worried that groomers in general may not be very familiar with Newf's so I thought I'd pose the question to some of the experts at BigPawsOnly first.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah, he just does it with other dogs, not people. He is generally a more submissive dog but he's still pretty young..

I have been thru this and my dog Cooper had triple pelvic osteotomy on both hips last summer. He was about 8 months old. My husband and I really struggled with the decision and heard the stories about dogs who "grew out of it" but the doctor didn't think he had a good chance b/c arthritis had already started in one hip. His surgery totaled about $6000 for both hips.
It is now about 9 months later and he is doing wonderfully. We just had some x-rays last week b/c his hips were making a clicking noise, but they looked great! No arthritis showing and full joint coverage. We don't regret it for a minute and feel fortunate that we had the resources to do it. It was a very hard recovery, though.

Newfoundland Discussions / stalking approach posture

My Newf mix has started this new behavior that I'm curious about. When approaching another dog from a distance, he crouches down in a "stalking" like posture similar to a Mountain lion or other big cat. Once he gets close, he bounces up playfully in effort to get the other dog to chase him. So it doesn't appear to be an aggressive behavior.. Should I be concerned that it could become aggressive (he's 16 months old)? Has anyone else seen this kind of behavior in your Newf's. I had never thought of them as "hunters" and that is what it looks like.

So last night I tried to teach Cooper the "which hand?" trick.. I definitely didn't consider the danger involved in that trick. His paws are weapons! They are so big and heavy and he grabs with his toes and nails.. It was a cute trick but very painful!!
