Wolfhound Discussions & Pictures / Re: one more question

mamadog has been helpful and I wondered where she went...I feel like I can't find anymore to read and until I find my gentle giant I may as well occupy myself by informing myself as much as I can, so that's why I asked again... thanks!!

she's 4 months and I found her at a humane society about 3 hours away...I think I'm going to drive up tommorrow and see if she's a fit. I spoke with them about adoption and the woman said that she thought there might be some schnauzer in there somewhere...I can really see it in her two sisters but she looks more like an "official" IW puppy (I dunno maybe her schnauzer genes are dormant) I initially thought that she meant giant schnauzer was in the mix but at 4 months they only weigh in at 30 lbs...she said they were malnourished when brought in but that still seems small to me...I dunno. If I do get her tommorrow I will certainly rain pictures on this site (she's very cute!!) thanks

Wolfhound Discussions & Pictures / one more question
« on: August 26, 2005, 01:21:14 am »
I have been researching Irish Wolfhounds for quite some time now (hopefully I'll be rescuing one soon!!) and have read as much as I can get my eyes on...I was wondering if anyone here could recommend some reading or websites that could possibly be beneficial? (there's always that website your search engine misses or that book your library doesn't have...)although I've found that most of the information I've come across is repetitive, it doesn't hurt to ask, right? thank you...

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / possible irish wolfhound rescue

I may have found an irish wolfhound for rescue in my area and am really excited and will most likely adopt if I can...my question is- to those few of you that have (or had) an IW that was a mixed breed, do you find that the size of the IW has been a dominant factor? the place where I found her says that she's an Irish Wolfhound, which I assume means pure breed...I will love her (if I get her) regardless but the thought of having a gigantic dog is very exciting...and I was just curious if anyone has found that size is dominant in mixed breed...thanks!!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / wolfhound, dane question
« on: July 30, 2005, 05:00:06 pm »
I was just curious...thos e of you that have a full grown wolfhound or dane...how much does your gentle giant weigh? I ask because I called up an IW breeder and she told me that her males average 180 and her femals average 150lbs...a dane rescuer told me something similar...i've been seeing several different weight ranges on the internet and was just looking for a more personal response....al so, how tall are your fences? i've been given various answers, from 5' to 6', to a small white picket fence...(i realize that training your dog is the key, once again i'm just looking for a more personal response...)

thanks,

matt

springfield, mo. I found a kennel/breeder about an hour away, but the more I researched I found out that this lady had problems with registering and a lawsuit (?) brought against her for animal treatment/conditions. Aside from that I think that she might have a puppy mill, to a degree. whether or not the puppy mill idea is on target, I'd rather not get a puppy from someone whose had problems treating their animals properly (I'd hate to get a puppy, get attached and then it dies two weeks later because of whatever reason)...If I don't end up going for a purebred I'd rather go to the Humane Society and find a mix that I can give a good home...even if I do that there aren't very many mixes around here (I went to the Humane Society today out of curiousity and asked how frequently a dane or wolfhound comes along and I was told about once every ten years...this lady had only seen two...so, I may end up with a dane from a breeder (I think a dane breeder is closeby) or a mix from the Humane Society (if I can find one)...I've found IW breeders in Kansas City and St. Louis- both are three hours away. it would certainly be worth drive. I'm still in the research phase and am caught up on the IW's...I've heard nothing but great things about them...when I look at pictures they all seem to have a personality that fits me...time will tell...thanks.

ps. finn looks/sounds like a pretty good dog...seems like you're lucky...

thanks for the pics...jack's a pretty good looking dog. how much does he weigh? i'm guessing about 125lb? how tall is he? i can't guess because he's always sitting down in your pictures!!  ;) i'm certain that i will have a dane or danes at some point... i'd like to own enough property to be able to accommodate several extra large dogs. (i'm still waiting to find the best place for such a giant) do you think (or know) how much different a dane/wolfhound mix would be? to my understanding wolfhounds already have dane in them..so would they just be more danish? (that was funny,  funny to me at least...ha. danish...) anyway, enough with the dumb joke...

I have also put some thought into getting a dane... and in a perfect world I'd have a couple of every extra-large breed in a giant fenced park/yard...I think that it will come down b/t a dane and a wolfhound. (something about the wolfhound though)...Concerning temperment- I've read nothing but good things concerning kids, other pets, other people...is this because of socialization or genes? or maybe a combination of both? I've had several encounters with danes and each one has been pleasant, but unfortunately the dog I want is not too common around here and I've only encountered one or two when I was just a kid...what kind of vehicles do people recommend for someone who owns an extra large breed? I've only got a Thunderbird for the time being and will most likely get something bigger whenever I decide to get myself a gentle giant...thanks

I have been seriously interested in the IW for quite some time now and was hoping that anyone here would be willing to offer advice, recommend reading, etc...concerin g an IW specifically. I have also been considering a great dane, mastiff, saint B...(most other large dogs) I have contacted the IWCA and AKC through email for advice and am following suit here...I myself would be considered an "extra large dog", if I were a dog...I'm 6'9", 275lbs and have always felt that a bigger dog would be more up my alley, whenever I encounter a small dog I think that I should just go ahead and get another cat (I already have two) While I love my two kittens forever, I want to feel like I've got a companion and not an animal who gives me attention when they feel like it (my cats are exceptional in that respect, but nonetheless... they are still cats and they choose their affections) I have researched many extra-large breeds and find myself going to the Irish Wolfhound, every time...everyth ing I read about them seems like me. Big and lazy- but can really move if necessary. (Former college basketball player who loves doing nothing but also enjoys exercise)...a wolfhound just seems like the dog I'm destined to get...any advice, thoughts, recommendation s, anything?

thanks...

matt
