Akita Discussions / Re: You Don't Have To Be Big To Be A Bully!!
« on: August 14, 2005, 11:17:35 pm »
"I just get annoyed acting like it is my fault I am walking my dog"

Amen to that! I find myself feeling like I have to apologize to the people, who don't know squat about dog behavior, who are standing around looking disapprovingly at my "bully" breed after smooshing a daschund or a mean jack russel. It's so stupid. I quit apologizing, I just stare back like I'm waiting for an apology from the daschund's owner (even though I know he'll never apologize).

On a side note, dog social behavior is certainly interesting at off leash dog parks, but sometimes I think the human social behaviors are even more interesting!  :D

Akita Discussions / You Don't Have To Be Big To Be A Bully!!
« on: August 13, 2005, 03:02:57 pm »
ok, I'm sure this topic has been covered and it probably has happened to alot of you out there, but I really just have to rant for a second.

I am sick of everyone siding with a small dog when your dog gets in a tiff. I don't mean all out dog fight, but just some growling and snarling. About 95% of the dogs who have bitten my older 90 pound akita mix are jack russels/daschunds/beagles, etc. We go to off leash dog parks all the time and these little dogs see my dog as a threat and just run up to him, growl, and bite him. Sometimes they just run up to him and bite him without any warning as he's sniffing the grass or walking by them 3 feet away. For example, there is a little daschund who goes to the same park and he always chases my dog around and bites his privates! And when my dog is sitting down and sun bathing or being pet, the little daschund will try to mount him or bite his privates again! and as expected,  my dog gets pretty darn angry. He'll growl and the daschund will bite him, then he'll take his paw and smoosh the daschund on the gorund to keep it from biting him while he's making scary noises to scare the daschund away. Of course, I am blamed and people are kicking my dog or grabbing him by the collar and pulling him away while the little dog is taking freebie bites out of my dog. the little dog's owner acts so angry and offended that my big bad wolf tried to eat his private-biting angel. That little devil has even growled at me a bunch of times when I see him going for my dog's privates and I try to run defense.

I think as large dog owners, we know that some people fear our dogs or fear that our dogs may be aggressive.  So we overcompensate by training our dogs, socializing them, training them some more, and socializing them some more. We are sure to let them know what is okay and what is not. As an owner of a "bully breed," I make certain that my dogs have exposure to as many types of people, children, animal, sites, sounds, etc. But some little dog owners think their dogs can do no harm b/c they're so small and it's the big dogs you have to look out for, or that their little jack russel is so cute being so tough and taking a bite out of a huge dog. These little dogs get away with murder! It might be in the smaller dog's nature to snap at larger dogs when they feel threatened, but this is where training comes in. It's in my akita's nature to eat little dogs, but I've trained him and conditioned him that he just ignores them now. I blame the owner, not the dog. My dogs don't react by tearing the dog apart, but they do bark a "get off of me!" or they smack the little dog with their paw with a scary sounding growl just to get it off of them.

I mean, how would you feel if a smaller person came up to you and smacked you in the back of the head? I'm pretty small, but Ican't just walk up to a tough looking guy who is just walking by on the side walk and smack him in the back of the head or kick him in the shin and expect him to do nothing or blame him when he gets mad. Or if he yells at me to stop, like how my dogs bark at the little dog, and I still keep standing there kicking him over and over again, I can't blame him for trying to get me away from him. I think it's the same thing with little dogs biting larger dogs. You can be under 20 pounds and still be a bully!  >:(

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Canidae dog food

Lyn:

I am mixing Canidae with Wolf Cub too and my pup miraculously has firm stool now too! so weird. Do you think it was the wolf cub by itself? I had him on innova puppy then to wolf cub and he kept making little pancakes. then he went on a bland diet with antibiotics and then to wolf cub with canidae. strange! I wonder if there is something that has to do with the salmon or bison in the wolf cub that gives some puppies loose stool.

Hi Brigid:

I'm not sure if you were talking to me or the person who started the post. If me, then yes, I have tried the nyla bones. I've gotten the chicken flavored puppy bones to the harder ones to the bacon flavored healthy edibles and he smells it for a second, maybe gives it one or two chews every few days, and pretty much ignores it. Same with the bully sticks. Sometimes he will chew on them, sometimes he won't. I wonder if I should soak them so the taste comes out. Someone suggested to boil the nyal bones in chicken broth and I haven't done that yet. I'll post if it helps pique his interest...

ARG! It is driving me crazy! He loves roasted bones my boyfriend gives his rott but I can't leave him with one in his crate. I also found these rib bones on valleyvet.com that don't splinter but they last for maybe 90 seconds...ARG!  ???  :'( why so picky, little akita?!?

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Innova Evo for Puppies?
« on: August 08, 2005, 06:41:39 pm »
yeah, I would think that 26% would be too much for an akita too. I think maybe I should continue mixing Canidae with the Solid Gold. After this bag, I think I'm just going to stick to Innova Puppy. My other dog is on innova evo (he is doing great on it) and I've been told that it is great for large breed adult dogs too, except that the protein level is 42% and it doesn't contain carbs. I'm assuming that's why it's not good for large breed pups, but what do I know?

Food Discussion & Information / Innova Evo for Puppies?
« on: August 08, 2005, 01:33:19 am »
I read on another forum that Innova Evo was bad for large breed puppies but there wasn't a reason why. From what I know about Innova Evo, I assume it's because there is a lot of protein and no carbs (and puppies probably need the carbs for energy).

Iams came out with a study that I found on the web (I'll put my personal beliefs on Iams aside for now) that stated that the correct percentage should be 26% protein for large breed pups.

I started out with Innova Large Breed Puppy (24%) but the feed store I go to only has tiny little bags of Innova that I would end up spending much much more than I would if they had a large bag b/c the small bags are more expensive.

My other dog is on Innova Evo and it would be nice to have both dogs on the same food. my boyfriend's dog is on Canidae all life stages, which is why I've been able to mix.

Does anyone have an opinions on this? Thanks in advance!!

Food Discussion & Information / Re: Rawhides

Has anyone tried the sweet potato chews? they are supposed to be long lasting and the alternative to rawhides. I haven't tried them but have been thinking about it. My dogs are extremely picky (one won't touch bully sticks, the other does sometimes depending on his mood) and I'm looking for something that lasts longer for my puppy when he gets bored in his crate. (he doesn't spend long in it, but it would be nice for him to have something to do).

He won't touch nyla bones and greenies only time to time (and I've heard many dogs have choked on greenies!) And he doesn't like rawhides even if I were going to give them to him (which I won't because of the same reasons as already mentioned)

I wanted to try raw bones (with my supervision) but I live in an apartment and my dogs are indoor dogs and I'm worried about sanitation (I'm moving to a house in November, but for now, I'm worried about giving them raw bones inside the apartment).

Does anyone have any suggestions for something that lasts longer than pig ears/tendons/ etc. for picky eaters? Can you believe my akitas don't like pig snouts/bully sticks/raw hides/etc.? drives me crazy!!

Also, my vet warned about chipping teeth on roasted bones as well. The side tooth near the back (ones shaped like a W) jut out a little more than the other teeth. these are the ones dogs use when they chew a bone (you know how they turn their heads sideways and chomp on a bone? that's the tooth). these are the ones that are most prone to being chipped. I then looked at my older dog and he has a little chip in one of those teeth (and he's not a really aggressive chewer!). I went online and found tons of other people who hav experienced the same problem. If your dog hasn't chipped any, than that's excellent. But for others who don' tknow whether their dog would chip a tooth might want to play it safe and use an alternative... just my opinion.

BabsT: your boy is so handsome. he has the look of a wise king that knows more than me!  :D

And I loooove the picture of your babe, grumpybunny--such a perfect shot of a happy puppy!  :P

The absolute worst thing that anyone has ever said to me was last spring when I had Hutch out for a walk. A big rough-n-tough man was admiring Hutch and then had the nerve to tell me that is an awful lot of dog for a woman to be out walking!!! :o.

UGH!! I haven't gotten that one YET, but will soon. When I walk my mix breed, I get a lot of guys thinking they are making a joke by saying "gee, couldn't you have gotten a larger dog?" or "You could put a saddle on him and ride him?" or the classic, "who's walking who?" or "you better hold on tight to his leash" (and my mix isn't that big! he's only about 85 pounds!)

speaking about people having no clue about your breed of dog, I've also heard people tell each other that my akita is a husky. Some people don't ask me but talk among themselves and I just hear them say he's a husky, husky mix, malamute, etc.

I also heard a woman say to her friend as we walked by the other day:

Woman's Friend: Oh, look at the puppy. What kind of puppy is that?
Woman (in a snobby voice): It's a husky. A poorly bred husky--his markings are all crooked.

AARRRGGGG!!!!! >:(

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Vaccination Problems
« on: August 05, 2005, 02:06:14 pm »
Hi All:
Thanks for the info! From what I gather, it seems as if there isn't enough info to link the exact cause and so as a precaution, they suggest just separating the vaccines and separate rabies from the other vaccines by at least a week...I called my vet but she hasn't returned my call (she only works two days a week--what a great job!). I'll post more if I find out more from her, but who knows. I'll also look for that article on the Akita Club of America website...

Big Dogs with Jobs / Re: Newbie to Showing!

I always forget to include where I live! grrr
I live in Seattle and surprisingly there isn't an akita club in seattle--strange.

You guys are toooooo funny!!  ;D :D ;D
Love the phrases to say to people! I should definitely try that! Or whenever someone says that I akitas are mean, I should say, you're right! he just ate the last stranger that said that to me!

Thanks for understanding too! I used to think it was just b/c I looked young (you know what I'm talking about angus!) but I guess the world is full of idiots trying to prove their idiocy. Sheesh. Maybe I will start making up funny things to say just to completely throw them off...like, this isn't a dog, it's a tiny furry dairy cow...

I am a newbie to a lot of things concerning dogs. I'll be the first to admit it. I take my puppy to kindergaten classes and to agility classes. why? Because I'm not an expert and can't possibly train him myself. and when he's older, we're going to conformation handling classes. why? b/c I'm a newbie. I've never shown a dog.

BUT, I'm not a newbie to basic dog care or to my breed.

I have a puppy akita and those aren't extremely rare but they definitely aren't "popular" in seattle. Several trainers I've called before enrolling in classes have never taught an akita.

I just can't stand everyone who automatically becomes an akita expert or a vet, even though they aren't when I go to parks or take my pup on walks.

I'm 5'3", asian, and look as if I'm 19 years old (but I'm a freakin' attorney!! I'm much OLDER) and everyone wants to tell me how to raise my pup and everyone just assumes I'm feeding him kibble n' bits and not training him even though he almost always has his eyes pinned on me and listening to what I'm saying/doing. They all talk down to me and say, well, you should start obedience classes b/c akitas can be mean" and they go into a tirade about the breed's history, what they were used for, etc. as if I just bought my dog off a bum on the street without thorough research. These people have only "read" of akitas, not actually owned one.  This is my second akita, if you count my half breed I rescued. I've been researching akitas and been wanting one for over 5 years now. My friend in Houston breeds and showed akitas so I asked her tons of questions and had tons of exposure to them (I'm no expert, but I certainly know as much as one can from reading and asking people).

People have even said, "are you sure you will be able to handle him? maybe an akita wasn't a good idea. I know they are pretty, but they take a [insert whatever adjective they think I'm not here] owner." Gee, guys, this is my SECOND akita, my FIFTH asian spitz, and I'm not in highschool!! People have even asked me if it was my parents' pup! Or if we take him to the park, everyone has to give me advice about what shots I should give him. They assume that I havent' taken him to a vet. Several women on different occassions have come up to me and said "what kind of dog is that? an akita! oh, I've heard they are aggressive. You should take him to obedience class! Have you taken him to a vet? It's very important that puppies get their shots and you can't just go once, you have to go several times. Well...good luck with him, you're going to need it!" or "How old is your pup? 12 weeks? Has he received his rabies yet? No?! Why not! You are going to kill your dog! He needs to get his rabies. Oh, your vet said he's too young? well, your vet isn't as good as my vet. you shouldn't go to a discount vet." Well, I was told that rabies isn't given untli they are at least 4 months by...everyone! but, I guess you're the expert lady!

Oh, a vet? I was supposed to take him to a vet? really?!? I took him to a vet within 24 hours of picking him up from the breeder. I've already spent hundreds at the vet (mostly due to Seattle's ridiculous inflation rates!) and I've only had him for 4 weeks. I've chipped him, dewormed him, gave him his shots, done fecal exams, wellness exams, etc. I even spent hours and hours researching and calling vets/pet store owners before I got him to find out which vet would be the best for me and my pup.

If you are an expert on akitas, please, by all means, talk to people with akitas, give them information. this type of info is extremely appreciated. but if you have only heard of akitas, or don't have a clue on akitas, please don't assume that you are an expert and start dispensing advice. Also, not everyone is an idiot or as inexperienced as you think they are. Even if I were 19, there are 19 year olds in the show ring who have won! If you're not an expert, don't act like one! (sorry for the rant, I'm just so fed up!)

Hi Zima! Keep us posted on how you're doing. you are much too cute to be rubbing your nose raw. (also, did you take the criminal investigations class in law school? i just graduated so I was wondering. I really enjoyed crim pro investigations).

Anyway, I won't repeat about the benedryl/neosporin. there are also some anti-itch creams that contain cortisone. It's a steroid so it reduces swelling and inflamation and it only has a little amount so it's not going to make her nose all buff or anything ;). When my older dog was hit by a car, the vet gave him some cortisone to reduce swelling, but it also controls itching. It stings though, so don't be freaked out if your dog winces. But, yes, definitely ask your vet!
