Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: URGENT - medical advice needed!
« on: April 13, 2006, 01:18:42 am »
I don't have any experience with this in the dog world, so take this with a grain of salt, but I am an assistant to a human neurosurgeon and this is a very common condition in people and a fairly common surgical procedure as well, very often with good results.  The symptoms in people manifest themselves in much the same way, weakness and pain in the legs (equating to the back legs in dogs), occasionally with bladder or bowel incontinence (in severe cases).  I don't know how helpful this is, but I'd say if you feel that your dog is suffering, there is a good chance that this type of surgery would relieve a good deal of his pain by taking pressure off of the nerves that are being compressed.  (And I know it sounds like a lot of money, but you're actually getting a good deal-this surgery costs about $10,000 in the human world.   :o)

Anyway, just my two cents....   :)

The only thing that suprises me is that Murphy eats 7 cups a day on such a high quality food. Based on their feeding reccomendation s, a dog in the 125-150 range would eat 6-7 cups a day. So techincally that is in the right range, but for most big dogs you should try to feed closer to the low end of the range to keep them a healthy weight. If Murphy is a good weight for him, then keep doing what you're doing. But if you think that he could loose some weight, I would gradually start reducing his food down to 6 cups.

Thanks Heather!  I feel much better now.  I've been feeding Natural Balance since Murphy was 9 weeks old, but just wanted a reality check to be sure I was still doing the right thing.  As for his weight/portions, he definitely is nowhere near overweight!  Most people comment on how "lean" he is-I think they're just being polite.   ::)  I actually started supplementing with the yogurt to get him to EAT his food, because he was eating like a bird before that....  But now that he is getting closer to a healthy/normal weight, I will keep an eye on him and reduce portion sizes as needed to make sure he doesn't get to hefty!   :D  Thanks again for your input!

Hi Shangrila-
If you're not tired of talking about this yet, I have a question....I am currently feeding my 2 year old Dane the Natural Balance Ultra Premium.  He eats about 7 cups/day, and weighs around 140 lbs.  Is this a good food for him at this stage, or would something like Canidae be better?  I also usually supplement with plain yogurt on his dry food, because he's picky and won't eat it by itself.  He also gets the occasional leftover chicken or meat from our dinner, whatever scraps we have left to make it appetizing.

Thanks for your help!

Murphy will be 2 years old in February, and weighs about 130 (not positive on that) and is 35" at the shoulder.  His weight fluctuates depending on how much he feels like eating, and how much I can convince him he really WANTS to eat....   :)

I was just searching the web today for this very thing (a durable toy-preferably squeaky) that would last for more than a few hours and I came across this web site:

https://secure.edogtoy.com/~admin3/index.html

They're called "Tuffies", and I'm just wondering if anyone has tried them?  If so, did they live up to their billing?  (Supposedly almost indestructible)  I would love to hear about anyone's experiences if they have tried them.....

Thanks!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / Re: HELP!!! Dewclaw Injury!!

It's definitely just the nail that's broken off, he hasn't pulled the nail out of his leg or anything, and there doesn't seem to be any injury to the area where it connects to his leg.  Ok, I will just see if I can get the bleeding stopped and get him to the vet tomorrow.  My vet is closed tonight-there is an emergency vet I can take him to, but I don't really think this constitutes an emergency unless he keeps bleeding, but I think he'll be ok.  Thanks for the advice, guys!

Medical Conditions & Diseases / HELP!!! Dewclaw Injury!!
« on: November 12, 2005, 07:19:26 pm »
Okay, so I was just on my way home from Murphy's first dog park trip in MONTHS due to his lengthy and difficult surgical recovery (a whole other story) when my 5 year old son noticed that "his paw was bleeding".  In actuality, he has broken off one of his dewclaws about halfway up, and it's bleeding all over the place.   :(  I put some of the styptic powder that comes with the nail clippers on it that is supposed to stop bleeding, but I don't know what else to do with it....Should I clip it off so it's not all ragged?  Will that make it bleed more?  Should I bandage it up?  Just leave it alone?   ???  Anyone have any suggestions?  Thanks!!

At the same time use the rolled up newspaper trick. It works every time. The very next time you find a spot where she has urinated when you were not looking, take out the rolled up paper, and hit YOURSELF over the head with it several times as you repeat: I FORGOT TO WATCH MY PUPPY.

;)

LOL, you give the best advice.....  So funny.   ;D

Welcome Murph.  We live near Fresno, CA and will be vacationing in about a week in Oregon.  Has it been raining up there?

Peggy

Oops, I hope you're not already here, I didn't see this until today!  It has been raining the last few days, but that's the great Pacific Northwest for ya!   ;D  What part of Oregon are you coming to?

Hi, I have posted a few times, but haven't officially introduced myself yet, so I thought it was about time to do that!  I'm Lisa, and Murphy is my 1.5 year old Great Dane.  We live in Tigard, OR with my husband and our 5 year old son.  This site is awesome!  Everyone is so friendly and there is tons of information.  I'm so glad I found it.....   ;D
