Boxer Discussions & Pictures / New puppy is here!
« on: November 30, 2005, 08:43:15 am »
When I joined this board, I had just learned that my boxer Gunner had cancer. Within 2 months, he was gone. I said I'd never get another boxer. . but here is Jordan. She is 10 weeks old tomorrow. So much smaller than Gunner though, not really a Big Paws. At 6 weeks he weighed 14 lbs, and she only weighed 7.11 at the same age.

Anyway- so far so good, she's a great puppy. . .Here she is, playing with the gang.  :D

Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Does Anyone Have a Dog Door?
« on: November 14, 2005, 05:19:13 am »
We have always had a dog door, but not for use when we're not home. Too afraid of the dogs being stolen. Most doors come with a slide that you put in to close it off when you want to keep the dogs in. And unfortunately I've had to use this door twice when I have locked myself out of the house! ::)  Good thing I have a big dog door, I barely squeezed through! But it is nice not to have to get up every twenty minutes to let the dogs in and out.  House training is a breeze with a dog door also.

Rottweiler Discussions / Re: Favorite Names for Dogs
« on: November 06, 2005, 08:24:50 am »
I'm glad someone started this post. We've been trying to come up with a name for a female boxer puppy which could be in our future. We have tons of boy names we both like, but we can't find a girl name. I like sports themes, and our favorite vacation place is the Yucatan pennisula in Mexico. Maya comes to mind, for the Mayan people who live there. But anyone have anything else?  ???

Great Dane Discussions / Re: To Neuter or Not To
« on: November 05, 2005, 10:02:21 am »
I can't refute anyone's personal experience, but my vet neutered Rudy at three months, and he is huge! ( 100 lbs and 29" at the shoulder)  He is a Boxer/Great Dane mix, and it didn't impede his growth. Actually,  we couldn't even tell he'd had surgery. It was very easy on him. On the other hand, we had our Boxer nuetered at 4 years, and that poor guy was in lots of pain. His recovery time was about a week.

Thanks everyone- she does have a more narrow nose than a Great Dane, but with poor breeding . . who knows.  Wow- those Catahoulas are beautiful! I see the pattern is very similar to hers. Hard to believe any of those are running loose in my area (rural NW Ohio) breeding at will, lol!  But there is certainly a similarity!  Maggie is two years old. She will be on Petfinders very soon with Purebred Rescue Organization. ( Yes they rescue mixes also :) ) Her next stop after recovering from surgery here is to prison for some training, probably 6 weeks.  Then hopefully she will be adopted in time for the holidays. . wish us luck!

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: I hate the days I work.....

Counting the hours until vacation makes for a looooong day ;D But hey, what part of Mexico are you going to? I'm a little worried for you, Wilma is blasting my favorite vacation/diving destination, Cozumel as I type. Hopefully you are not headed anywhere near the Yukatan Pennisula???  If not, HAVE FUN!  Drink a margarita for me!

Helpful Groups & Dogs in Need / Pictures of my new foster- any ideas??
« on: October 21, 2005, 08:41:48 am »
Hey everyone-

I had taken a break from fostering for awhile- but looks like we're back in! I visited this girl at the Humane Society a few times before taking in her in as a foster. She is gorgeous, but what breeds do you think she is?  I came here to the big dog experts! I definately see Great Dane, and I think Greyhound. Anyone have any ideas? She is 28 inches at the shoulder, and appears underweight at 74 lbs. Her name is Maggie and   she's a gem!

They are usually sleeping in their bed, where they can easily see me. But when Rudy has had enough, he starts to bring me toys to throw for him. If I ignore one toy, he will drop it and bring a different toy. . then another. . . as if he just needs to find the RIGHT toy to get my attention. He thinks he's upping the stakes each time, LOL silly dog.  When all else fails, the three of them start a big wrestling match with each other in my tiny den, which usually gets me away from the computer. ;D

Remembering those no longer with us. / Re: Farewell Sassy

What a sweet face!  Those great pictures made me smile, you have no idea how much I needed that right now. Sassy continues to touch people even now that she's at the bridge. . .

Jake and Laura,

So sorry to hear about George. . .so tragic.  Rescues always have a special place in my heart. . you gave him a great life he wouldn't have had otherwise. I have also recently lost a dog so I'm grieving right along with you.

Remembering those no longer with us. / Goodbye Gunner
« on: October 05, 2005, 10:02:32 am »
I just joined this board, and had a chance to post a few pictures of my Boxer, Gunner.  Saturday October 1st, we lost Gunner to cancer. We fought it for a month.  I can't even begin to say how much this hurts, and reading some of the recent posts about George and Sassy, I see I don't have to. You all understand, and you have my sympathy as well.  I guess somehow we get past it, but I don't know how at this point.  Just wanted to share some pictures of the best dog I've ever had. I just don't ever want to forget anything about him even if memories bring tears along with smiles.

Great thread, these dogs are all gorgeous.. . here is my favorite picture from about 5 years ago. . . the day we brought our Boston terrier home to meet Gunner.

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: OK Judges turn for the "BIG SNIP"

Coonie-

I had to laugh about your comment about the vasectomy, I said the same thing!!! When Gunner had his surgery at age 3, I fully expected him to come home without the "boys".  He looked much like Judge, all swollen and sore.  Don't worry, the worst part will be over soon, and it does shrink down to nothing.   I know sometimes we make the decision later in the dogs life, but to anyone considering having their pup altered, it is WAY easier on a puppy! Rudy was done at three months, and we couldn't even tell any surgery was done.  Give Judge a hug for all of us!

Ok, have the picture posting figured out- thank you! Newf- we're Buckeye fans also! Summer- thanks! It is tough to part with fosters, he's the only one we ever caved in and adopted.  Here is picture of Gunner. I didn't mention Gunner is currently receiving chemo therapy for Lymphoma. We're having a very rough time right now. Wish us luck guys. . .
