Looks like a blast!!

Sorry we had something in the family come up that prevented us coming... Sullivan would have loved to join in the fun!

Next time (please Jenn I'll help!!) we should be bringing two IW's (waiting on word from breeder right now!)

I live more than an hour away from Lancaster... but have visited there often..
I don't know of their dog limitations but I'm sure the more rural areas wouldn't have any restrictions.. .
Shame you couldn't pop in for Jenn's GTG today. (I'll be missing it because of a family obligation  )
I'ts a wonderful area of PA... there is civilization yet some beautiful country..
Good luck with your move..and hopefully we canall get together when you get here.. I have one IW and soon will have another..
7 large breeds!!  Wow.. We have Sullivan, two Cairn Terriers, my daughter's teacup chihuahua... and soon another IW..
There are regulations about dogs in my area.. but as long as your pups aren't trouble, most don't come into play..

I can understand having been there a few years ago with a part lab pup we got from the ASPCA.  Elijah was my daughter's dog and he lived with her in the city.  We had seen some aggressive behaviors toward men. When my son carried his lacrosse stick into the house over his head, Elijah went after him. So, we figured abuse and beatings had been part of Elijah's life.  We were very careful that he not run free ever. and worked diligently on his training and behaviors.
But then he attacked a young man on the streets while being walked on his lead and we knew that nothing we could do could help with him.
Very simply there is nothing you have done to cause Petra to act that way, but those early months something was wrong with how he was treated or how his owners interacted with Petra.
I hope this behaviorist has an answer for you that is not what appears to be the obvious..

If we are voting... we opt for #1..Lancaster is closer for us...
Also, Sullivan is not neutered.  I realize that is only for the off-lead part, but he'd miss all the fun if he couldn't go off lead!!

I was a Vet Tech for 15 years. In my experience most of the big dogs did not have a problem with them. There are some Vets who empty the glands as a matter of routine. I say if it ain't broke don't fix it. It seems as though the more they are manually emptied, the more they need to be emptied.  If they are leaking or infected they need emptying. A good diet resulting in firm stools and exercise is the best preventative.
There is a surgery that can be done to remove them, but it is risky as there are many nerves that can be compromised. Then the dog will have no control of the sphincter muscle.

Would you then suggest that when I take Sullivan (or our other dogs for that matter) to the groomer....tha t we ask her not to express the gland?  She does it each time, if there's something there...If expressing it causes more need to be expressed??  I mean, I had never heard of having to have it done til about 10 years ago.. a friend had a Brittany who "always" needed it done.....and I've owned dogs for 30 plus years..

I just googled the same thing for my area (eastern PA) and found there are bunches of them...some in the city..some outside...

We took Sullivan to Riverside Park in NYC (Manhattan) a few weeks ago when we went to visit his previous owner and her IWs..they have a doggie park...It's pretty cool...

I never saw so many different breeds of dogs walking through that park...just amazing...name one..I probably saw it!!  LOL
