Wolfhound Discussions & Pictures / Re: how many wolfhounds?
« on: October 03, 2007, 03:55:10 pm »
coming in quite late.  I've been absent from the site for awhile... Very busy! and having health problems myself.

But we have one IW for now.  Sullivan is 4 years old. and a cream grey brindle.  He's my beautiful boy.

We had plans on getting another about a year ago, but those changed and we are still with a single IW.. and two cairns and four cats ;)

Looks like a blast!!

Sorry we had something in the family come up that prevented us coming... Sullivan would have loved to join in the fun!

Next time (please Jenn I'll help!!) we should be bringing two IW's (waiting on word from breeder right now!)

What a great time...what great pictures...

Thanks for sharing

We watched it also on TV yesterday... and were disappointed not to see on TV  the beautiful Irish Wolfhound that won in his breed...as well as the other big breeds ... I didn't see any pyrenees at all...
We went to the show on Saturday for a few hours in the morning, for the individual breed contests.... There were so many gorgeous dogs there!  We spoke with the IW winner ... her dog was really a beautiful hound..
Saw several Newfies... the deer hound that won Best in Show on Saturday... Margot ...she was up for Best in Show on TV but lost to the cute bull terrier
It was alot of fun.. I would do it again....If you ever have an AKC dog show in your area... go.... I really learned alot about the two breeds I have the IW and the little cairn terrier... speaking with the owners after they showed....

Meet & Greet BPOers / Re: Anyone live near Lancaster PA?
« on: November 18, 2005, 09:55:54 am »
I live more than an hour away from Lancaster... but have visited there often..
I don't know of their dog limitations but I'm sure the more rural areas wouldn't have any restrictions.. .
Shame you couldn't pop in for Jenn's GTG today. (I'll be missing it because of a family obligation  :( )
I'ts a wonderful area of PA... there is civilization yet some beautiful country..
Good luck with your move..and hopefully we canall get together when you get here.. I have one IW and soon will have another..
7 large breeds!!  Wow.. We have Sullivan, two Cairn Terriers, my daughter's teacup chihuahua... and soon another IW..
There are regulations about dogs in my area.. but as long as your pups aren't trouble, most don't come into play..

Sorry..but Sullivan and my family have to send our regrets too.. I was so excited about coming...but we have a family thing at 3 pm..(my brother and SIL2B) and my dad will be up here from NJ shores...

so, we're going to go to the Philadelphia Kennel Club in the a.m... to see the IWs, Cairns and chihuahuas...

Here's the website:  http://www.philadogshow.com/

anyone who wants to go from there or on Sunday if you stay over... it's at the Ft. Washington Expo Center, in FT. Washington PA.. I am guessing it's at least an hour away possibly longer from Lancaster..

If you go to the link...you can get the schedule of when the breeds you're interested in are going to be 'on'...

I look forward to seeing the pictures... I hope we can do this again and Jenn... I'll be your biggest assistant next time..even driving the hour or so to pick up the bathroom key!!!

So sorry...we are disappointed.. . :-(

this is so sad for you and Petra..
I can understand having been there a few years ago with a part lab pup we got from the ASPCA.  Elijah was my daughter's dog and he lived with her in the city.  We had seen some aggressive behaviors toward men. When my son carried his lacrosse stick into the house over his head, Elijah went after him. So, we figured abuse and beatings had been part of Elijah's life.  We were very careful that he not run free ever. and worked diligently on his training and behaviors.
But then he attacked a young man on the streets while being walked on his lead and we knew that nothing we could do could help with him.
Very simply there is nothing you have done to cause Petra to act that way, but those early months something was wrong with how he was treated or how his owners interacted with Petra.
I hope this behaviorist has an answer for you that is not what appears to be the obvious..
Please, I'm interested to hear how things go.
Hugs

My husband just had a situation with an older woman who lives nearby...she yelled at him and Sullivan when they walked past her house.  Out of the door she came telling John that Sully leaves "gifts" on her yard.  John was picking up a deposit Sully had just left and told her that he never leaves anything behind.  She said..OH yeah..and led him over to a small pile of dog turd.  He laughed and said, Lady, look at the size of this dog... ifyou think for one minute that he can leave a tiny pile like that, you're misinformed.  I always clean up after my dog. and he walked away..

I think he should put this T-shirt on Sully when he walks past her house next time:  http://shop.store.yahoo.com/wiztees/curbthis.html

OK..not so nice...but it is funny!

If we are voting... we opt for #1..Lancaster is closer for us...
Also, Sullivan is not neutered.  I realize that is only for the off-lead part, but he'd miss all the fun if he couldn't go off lead!!

Keep us in mind.

Anything Non-Dog Related / Re: Honest opinion....

To one Babs from another.... Sorry you're having this problem...

I didn't know anything about your breed until I came to this board and began reading...they are a very interesting animal..Not the one for me though...

Obviously the caucasians are different than your average ball of fluff..

I am sorry that someone here has taken it upon themselves to be your judge and jury... Sometimes people who don't know what they're talking about should keep their opinions to themselves...

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: Anal Gland health
« on: October 16, 2005, 06:40:11 pm »
I was a Vet Tech for 15 years. In my experience most of the big dogs did not have a problem with them. There are some Vets who empty the glands as a matter of routine. I say if it ain't broke don't fix it. It seems as though the more they are manually emptied, the more they need to be emptied.  If they are leaking or infected they need emptying. A good diet resulting in firm stools and exercise is the best preventative.
There is a surgery that can be done to remove them, but it is risky as there are many nerves that can be compromised. Then the dog will have no control of the sphincter muscle.

Would you then suggest that when I take Sullivan (or our other dogs for that matter) to the groomer....tha t we ask her not to express the gland?  She does it each time, if there's something there...If expressing it causes more need to be expressed??  I mean, I had never heard of having to have it done til about 10 years ago.. a friend had a Brittany who "always" needed it done.....and I've owned dogs for 30 plus years..

Treatment & Preventative Meds / Re: BLOAT Prevention
« on: October 16, 2005, 06:35:20 pm »
I have a question regarding bloat/torque... Sullivan is a snacker..He does eat a major portion at meal time...and he eats some and walks away...comes back eats some more..it takes him about an hour to eat...honestly!! and we feed him twice a day... Is that helpful in bloat prevention?

Great Pyrenees Pictures / Re: Rocky's big day at the dog park
« on: October 15, 2005, 09:39:13 pm »
Looks like a great time!! Sully's good for that too...great energy bursts and then... ahhh..rest...

I just googled the same thing for my area (eastern PA) and found there are bunches of them...some in the city..some outside...

We took Sullivan to Riverside Park in NYC (Manhattan) a few weeks ago when we went to visit his previous owner and her IWs..they have a doggie park...It's pretty cool...

I never saw so many different breeds of dogs walking through that park...just amazing...name one..I probably saw it!!  LOL
