I have the dog sickness bad.  I mean, who can have only one dog?  I feel so bad for Daisy when we have to leave the dog park and she goes home to try to play with the cats in vain.  Or today, when it *looks* like it might rain so they close the parks.  Basically, I just want another dog.  This week on craigslist there were TWO Danes (one brindle and one merle) and TWO Saints!  It's killing me!  One of the Saints was only 5 months old and got flagged off because they were asking $850, and the brindle dane is gone, but here are the ones that are still there:

No pictures, but I'm emailing for some.  I know, it's cruel, but just in case anyone is looking like me . . .

Wow.  I mean . . . wow.  There are people who spend inordinate amounts of time on Craigslist flagging posts that are from BYBs selling puppies that would have a nervous breakdown if they saw this.  It's so sad, because (and maybe I'm just being naive about breeding) it seems that any reputable breeder is going to be breeding for temperament, conformation, and health and is going to have references and/or a waiting list or something, but most of these animals seem to be bred just for show (by that I mean fashion accessory or novelty) and money, at least the ones in my area, bred for smallness.  Completely sad, especially the "teacup" everything (do they care it's illegal to sell animals under 8 weeks?) and the pitbulls being bred when thousands are dying in our shelters every year.

(edited because I'm having spelling issues)

Aaargh!  I am SO upset I was busy all day and didn't check this - I would totally have made a trip down there.  Daisy and I have a HUGE crush on Danes.  Wanna go back Thursday or Friday?  Pretty please?!?

Just out of curiosity, what are his parents' names?  I always liked the name Thorwald, from the Hitchcock movie North by Northwest.  So it could contain that somewhere . . .

Mixed Breed Discussion / Daisy's first snow, and other things.

I survived nineteen winters in Nebraska and five in Tennessee (which can be worse than one might imagine).  I got plenty used to power outages and feet of snow; one year in Omaha was so bad that most people moved into hotels with emergency generators.  My mother stayed vigilantly in our house, keeping the pets warm by staying with them in the bathroom, filling the bathtub with water heated over a fire.

Perhaps this is part of the reason I moved to Southern California.  We don't get snow by the beach here, obviously, so Daisy's never seen snow before.  For New Year's, my boyfriend and seven of our friends rented a cabin in north Lake Tahoe and we decided to take Daisy with us.  We got quite a bit of snow the first night, and the next morning was magical for her.  She rooted her snout down to the ground, flipped up a snowball, and then chased the snow where it landed.  Hikes were fantastic.  Unfortunately, we lost power, and therefore water, so by the third day we were getting a little anxious (no water = no toilet . . .).  Daisy was the only one for whom this was normal.

On an unrelated note, my boyfriend built Daisy a doghouse for Christmas.  It's a miniature ski chalet that he designed and built himself.  And I was worried that he wouldn't accept a dog in the family.

happy new year

Oh man . . . I guess it's a good lesson that I should stop giving advice where I don't know what I'm talking about.  Thanks for the information.  I'm going to go shrink into a corner now.

Really?!  Great, I'm up on my research and feel like a complete idiot.  For what?

My sister has an OCD ACD that does the same thing.  He breaks windows, tries to dig through the floor, whatever he can do to try and find her.  At this point she's just taken to having me babysit for her if she has to go somewhere (she takes the dog to work and school with her every day) like the grocery store where dogs aren't allowed.  Last week she left him here where he can at least play with Daisy and be somewhat comforted.  I went to answer the phone for not more than 40 seconds, and he had dug a 10 inch deep trench in front of the back gate.

I'm not sure why she hasn't contacted rescue yet - I think she just wants to see if she can give him to someone she can meet first.  I gave her some contacts for Gentle Giants and others.  She lives in Stockton, which is a little more north than I want to go, but we're going up to SF in a couple weeks anyway.  Apparently he has some aggression toward other dogs, but we're going to go up and see if he can get along with Daisy and maybe we can at least foster him or bring him back south to go to a rescue.

Oh, and George?  OMG.  Makes me wish I lived in Arizona.  He is GORGEOUS.

Aw, I'm sorry.  I really need to stop petfindering and craigslisting.

Anyone have room for another big paws?

I suppose it wouldn't hurt just to see if they could get along . . . I'm used to dealing with more independent breeds from working in rescue, and Daisy's pretty darn submissive with other dogs.

I know!  At least you're not in a neighboring city, it's killing me living so close!  I mean, Daisy really could use a playmate, right?  And my boyfriend does like fluffy dogs better . . . What else have I got to do when I'm home all day than train two adorable puppies?!

Ugh, my SO is still kind of adjusting to having one dog; I should give him some time and space before I start adding permanent members to the crew.  Since she already has a foster, I'm going to have to pass it on, but if she didn't have one, I'd definitely be interested.

Is that Southern or Northern CA?  (*thinking thoughts I shouldn't be thinking*)
