Rottweiler Pictures / Re: I found it and Mom says I can keep it.
« on: June 08, 2009, 03:25:04 am »
Many years ago I had a spaniel mix, Dax, who was a wonderful scavenger. He used to roam the neighborhood (back in those days it was still safe to do that) and bring back the most interesting things he could find. I remember deer antlers (only one side), a doll's head, a soggy teddy bear and the top half of a fishing rod. A day or two later he brought home the bottom half complete with reel. My husband was delighted with that one! He was also the one who buried his very first bone under the tissue paper in my hatbox. Ahhhhh, thanks Grace for triggering some great memories. Many happy years of treasure hunting to you!

The males I have owned (3) have ranged in weight from 158 to 193. Breccan, current and a rescue, is the lightest. He is 32.5 inches tall and built quite narrow for a Saint. My opinion is to be more concerned about proportion than overall weight. About how much weight is healthy for the heighth, joint and bone structure of the particular dog. Have the parents both been OFA'd? What were the results? While pups are growing it is much better for their ultimate health to be kept on the trim side. Especially if there is a chance of possible hip/elbow dysplasia to any degree. Congratulation s on your new pup. Post pictures soon!!

I too would like to express my sympathy to you on your loss of Slugger. Eleven years! You were very blessed.
A thought I had about bringing your new puppy home. Try not to stop at "rest stops" for potty breaks. Most of them insist on all dogs using the same area for relieving themselves. Dog only knows what nasties a seven week old could pick up there. If you must use one, carry her to the most remote corner and only let her down long enough to "go" and then pick her up and carry her back to the car. Take along some alcohol or antibacterial wipes and give her paws a good cleaning before you put her back in the car. We WILL need pictures ASAP!!

Deepest sympathy on the loss of your Molly. That must have been horrible for you. Hope the new little guy will help ease your pain.

Another thought! On May 2nd and 3rd, in Lima Ohio, is a big Saint specialty show known as the "Spring Fling". All Saint Bernards from all over the country. Great opportunity to talk to breeders, check out their dogs and maybe see some puppies. Word of advice. Go early, look and listen. Then when things quiet down, in the break between, or after classes, ask to talk to the people connected to the dogs that have really caught your eye. Things are a little stressed during the show but afterwards folks relax, kick back, and love to talk about their dogs. Lots to learn there.

Welcome to the list! A really good place to learn about Saints is at the national website. http://www.saintbernardclub.org/ You can get breeder referrals there as well. Three of my Saints have come from a show kennel in Ohio. If you want I can PM you about them. Another great source of info is the discussion group on yahoo http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/saint_bernard-l/ A lot of serious, long time breeders and Saint aficionados belong to it and share their expertise. Please, please, please take the time to research before you buy. A good breeder will be happy to mentor you and be there for you with answers to all your questions. They too want what's best for their/your puppy.

A rescue group "PawsOhio" has her listed on PetFinder now.

I forwarded the info on Molly to a 'St Bernard Rescue' list. Maybe someone there can get her into Rescue and/or help her find a new home. Where was the original post?

So relieved to hear everything is going so well! Great pictures! In the first set of pix, where Tink is sharing her bed, is that a 'homespun halo' she is wearing? :) I know, I know, it's a basket in the background, but it sure looks like the perfect symbol of her behavior toward her new sister - pawsitively saintly! Kudos to your vet and his staff. That was fantastic care.

Welcome to you and your precious gems. They are both beautiful. I have to admit though, after 4 decades of owning Saints, I have become partial to the easy upkeep on the smooth coat variety! :)

Congratulation s, she's beautiful!! Too many factors to make a guess on how big she will be. Was Mom big? Was Dad? Mom's extreme youth could possibly affect the litter's potential as well. According to an old (like from the 50's) weight chart I have, a 14 week old female should be around 42 pounds. This is fairly light for today's standard but your girl also has the Newf genes to consider as well. They may "lighten" her a bit :) Many times being born the runt of the litter doesn't mean staying small. "Good Girl", Tink, for being such a sweet, generous, big sister! How about Bell(e)(a), for a name? Then when you call the girls all you have to say is "Tink a Belle, come"!! :)

Anyone familiar with this? http://www.iwane.org/A_P.htm It's an accupressure point to relieve bloat. NOT an instead of, but something to do while you are on your way to the vet. At emergency speed!!

Welcome, and do post pix of your pups soon! Have you checked the previous threads under the "Dog Food Forum"?(left column on the message board home page) There is tons of great information there. Personally I feed Innova Adult and have been happy with the results.

Yayyyy, so very relieved to hear he didn't need surgery. Hugs and pawsitive healing energy coming his way.

Breccan lifts his leg when he poops!!! He even tries to find something to lift his leg on so as to leave crap hanging as high up as possible. Bushes, trees, tall clumps of grass, all festooned with poo-berries. It's embarrassing when we are out in public. People think he is 'marking territory' until he walks away and leaves the ornaments behind.
