I often help people with disabilities to train their own service dogs. Would be glad to help you with email input, if you like. Take a look at my website, then email me if interested. Muriel w/Wholly Paws!

Yeh, those are the kinds of "breeders" that I want to put a choke chain on and just yank as hard as I can.

I don't think every PetsMart does it, but here in Mobile we do a few every year.If one of the dogs in obedience class happens to be having a birthday, we use that as a prime opportunity for socialization time. It's a lot of fun, and customers get a new appreciation for neat things to do with their dogs.

Thanks, Stacie. Both of those sound like fun. We have a birthday party coming up on March 12th, and I am going to choose a couple of new games to try then. The ideas that have been suggested so far sound great.

::) OF COURSE! I should have thought of that! We've done bobbing for biscuits, but hot dogs would be much funnier and more fun. woofs and thanks, wholly paws

that's a really good idea, especially since people enjoy dressing their dogs up so much. I am having a birthday party for Jack at PetsMart next month, so may try that. thanks!

General Board for Big Dogs with Big Paws / Need ideas for dog party games
« on: February 18, 2006, 12:27:48 pm »
One of the hats I wear in my work is party planner for doggy birthday parties. I have a few standard games we play, like 'trainer says', musical sits, etc., and the pet owners all enjoy those. But I feel like those games are getting stale and boring. Do any of you have ideas for new games we can play? Bearing in mind that not all of the dogs have obedience training: many of them don't know any command other than sit or lie down! Thanks!

Thanks, Lisa! Your babies are absolutely beautiful. I did manage to post a pic of my Jack a couple of days ago and am working with my new digital camera to try to get pix of the others.

Monthly Photo Contests / Re: Fideaux Fashion Contest
« on: February 08, 2006, 01:07:13 pm »
the date for the Fideaux Fashion Fair at the Mobile PetsMart is April 15th from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Registration fees will go to benefit local animal rescue groups through PetsMart Charities. Not sure about how much the fee will be, but $5 or less per entry. Dogs can be registered in as many catagories as the owners want. I think it's going to be a whole bunch of fun, we will be getting fliers done soon. If any of you want to have a flier emailed to you, just email me and let me know. This is only being done at the Mobile store, just a small community thing. Muriel w/whollypaws

I am excited about a meet n greet for the southeast! Pensacola/Mobile sounds good, of course I live in the Mobile area. ;)  But I could also go anywhere in the state of Alabama or Pensacola-Ft. Walton. I have one suggestion tho: because of the active hurricane seasons we are having, I think it would be best to try to schedule this well before the month of July.  Amber and I will need to know pretty quickly about the date because we work together and will have to plan for the store being without both of us on the same day. Collars, crates, & other cool things / Re: Gentle Leaders

I am going to jump in here with my perspective as a dog trainer. It is true that some dogs simply don't have the personality to tolerate the GL. I only recommend it for dogs that are not already submissive, who pull very hard on the leash, are extremely distracted OR who show signs of aggression/assertiveness toward other dogs. I frequently do recommend the prong or pinch collar for dogs who cannot tolerate the GL. But in either case, I take the time to demo to the customer exactly how each piece of equipment should be used and tell them in no uncertain terms how it should NOT be used. One of my adts uses a GL b/c of dominance issues toward other dogs, and it works very well in that regard. Just my 32 cents!

Breeding Questions & Information / Re: How to find a good breeder....
« on: February 07, 2006, 12:23:25 pm »
Thanks for posting that, it was all good advice! I always tell people to ask the breeder for references from former buyers. If a pup comes from a line that has produced dogs that live to be very old, it usually means few health issues.

about the Chicken Soup dogfood: does anyone know how much corn is in it? I heard it is made by the same company that makes Diamond, who had that toxic corn food recall last month. I like to know how much corn is in a dog food and what rank it has on the ingredients list. Ditto wheat because so many dogs are allergic to it.

Gosh yes, Where the Red Fern Grows! And you know, I only watched Old Yeller ONCE in my entire life and I still remember the anguish. I was five years old. That was enough for me. Just can't take it. muriel at wholly paws

Introduce Yourself to the Forum / Re: Hi, I'm new here!
« on: February 06, 2006, 01:26:45 am »
Wow! I just want to send woofs and cyber-licks to everyone who wrote to welcome me to the forum. Sounds like a great community here. I will upload pix of my pack as soon as I figure out how to do it.  In the meantime, here's the rundown: Jack is about 8 yrs old, my first 'dale and my soul mate (don't tell my husband!) Duke is 3 yrs old and still thinks he's a puppy. Maggie is 2 and is the princess. Jack is my demo dog at work(I'm an obedience trainer at a local petstore, just like amberdoggoneit).
Thank you all, again, for the welcome notes.
