yes, that does help.  I take great care to feed him well, etc.  and he gets alot of exercise each day....we live near the beach.  He's healthy, so that's the most important thing!

Some ppl just seem to incite bad doggie behaviour i.e the screaming, the running towards the dog waving wildly like an idiot, the irresponsible little dog with napoleon complex owner.  Over the last few weeks I have begun to wonder how many dogs were labeled dangerous by animal control just because one of the above irresponsible people happened by them?  sad.... :-X

Food Discussion & Information / Re: She feeds him Ol Roy!

A few years ago, Consumer Reports did one of their studies on dog food and they ranked Ol Roy waaaaay up there.  WTF?   Perhaps that is why so many peeps are still using it?  Well, that and the cost.  Look at how many people buy dogs and they think they require no maintenance or expense.n  The dog food portion is just another aspect....

 >:(  Okay, I understand the allure of being around a big dog.  He**, that's why I've had giant breeds my entire life.  BUT, with that being said, why are there soooo many ignorant people out there?  We take our dogue de bordeaux to many places that dogs are allowed, for example, the beach.  EVERY single time, there is some fool that RUNS up to us and our dog screaming about how gorgeous he is.  They'll proceed to violently invade his space (no matter what we are doing) and while they are actively petting him ask this question....."DOES HE BITE?"  Okay, wtf?  Thank God, Brinks is such a tolerant dog.  He's simply a sweetheart and very socialilzed.  But, really, it makes me think of all the poor dogs out there who get blamed for things that were clearly the fault of some stupid person.

I'm not trying to offend anyone here, but geesh, step back from the big red dog. Anyone else have any of these horror stories?

Saint Bernard General Discussions / Re: Crates?
« on: June 10, 2006, 05:43:46 pm »
I am a total crating fan.  My parents bred Great Danes when I was younger.  When I was out of the house and on my own I had both great danes and bullmastiffs.  Now, I own a dogue de bordeaux. Each and every time, I got a puppy, I crated them when I was away from them.  I would be away for sometimes up to 8-hour periods.  I would use the crates until the puppy stages were passed and then only use the crates once in awhile.  In fact, I still have the crates (the doors are off) and the dogs use them on their own.  They drag all kinds of toys in there and often I find them sleeping in there.  It actually appears comforting to them.

There are lots of tips for using crates though that should be adhered to, for example, not using it for punishment and making sure they are not left alone for long periods every single day.

Try googling crate training and see what you come up with.  I think you'll find it's more beneficial than leaving the dog to it's own vices.  The Great Danes we've had fit nicely into the midwest crates we have.  They last forever.  For creature comforts we had padding made to fit the pan bottom.   Equip it with some chew toys and some favs and they'll love it.

Just took Brinks to the vet today as he was due to get more interceptor and advantage....H e weighed in at 105 lbs and he's just barely a year.  Is this on track for this breed?  Prior to my Dogue to I owned Bullmastiffs. I know they took a long time to mature.  I raised two of them. I hear of dogues weighing in at MUCH higher weights at a year, perhaps he's going to be small?  His dad was gargantuan...L OL

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone.  I live just south of Daytona Beach.  As soon as I find the thread on how to post a pic...I will.  Love the pics I've seen thus far.

Just saying hi.  Like all of you...major big dog fan here.  Parents raised great danes when I was young.  We've owned both bullmastiffs and Dogues.  Currently, have a one year old Dogue named Brinks!  Hope to make lots of friends here!   ;D
